Points 1 - 4 don't even bring you on event footing after the downgrade.
You must also add in difference in price/product between QF and JQ. They are vastly different airlines with totally different product and expectations and of course prices. Would you have EVER booked JQ given the choice? No...
Qantas is not in the top 5 long haul premium carriers by capacity that operates in Australia.
If Australia cannot sustain more than one long haul premium carrier, what does that say about Qantas?
Who could have possibly predicted that QR would buy into VA? Qantas Block Partner Earn on Competitor Routes
We're in for a fun ride over the coming years.
Many other airlines would do whatever it takes to get "P1 type spend" customers.
Sadly, with QF as a P1 - you are a small fish in a big pond.
One strategy might be to maintain Platinum with QF (to cover Domestic + some EK/oneworld), and Plat with another airline (eg: Thai if mostly Asia...
Option: Go hard to earn the extra 800 this year.
Relax next year, knowing you're P1 anyway, with no need to try and requalify. Fly whoever, wherever, without worrying.
Soft landing to WP the year after.
Karen doesn't care about any revenue boost.
Karen might even twist things and show how it's costing the airline money. For example, deferred SC earnings into future membership years is revenue dilution.
Karen cares about rules.
Just saying.... keep the good stuff to in-person conversations...
I like how you all freely talk about this in a public forum like nobody at qantas reads this stuff.
I guarantee you there is some mid-level Karen that has spent the past 5 months at work creating a 65 page powerpoint on how 'The billion dollar loyalty program of qantas is being scammed".
New tiers = someone gets devalued.
Less than 0.5% of frequent flyers have top-tier status, and even fewer % are in that ultra-top tier.
If anything - alliances could introduce a new lower tier.
"We will refund you the fare difference" is the biggest cough***, borderline illegal scam going on in the the airline industry right now (not saying VA does this - but typically this is what happens):
Here is how it the con works:
You book business class, for say, $1000
The airline, at this...
Free wifi is a perk of Skywards, and frankly, it's probably the Skywards/Loyalty department that is funding the initiative.
Wifi is not perk of the QF/EK tie-up, and it is not a perk of QF status.
It is a benefit of being a Skywards member.
$40 for priority everything -- and airlines wonder why people are less brand loyal today than ever before.
Make it $400 for priority everything and another $400 for lounge access.
Make it a giant advertisement for "FLY MORE -- EARN STATUS".
Those who want to pay -- will still pay.
Make legit...
In some ways, it's brilliant.
Turning the loyalty program back into a frequent flyer program instead of a free-for-all-lifestyle-nonsense that some airlines are obsessed with.
That lifestyle loyalty nonsense might bring in loads of new customers to earning points, but it ultimately results in...
I wouldn't worry about lounge overcrowding.
3,000 matches isn't a big number.
Take out QF Plat/Plat1/CL, who probably won't do it because Platinum isn't on the table (i.e., they get better treatment with QF...ironically - the Plat and higher type flyers spend more and usually have higher yield...
The lesson here, and with *ALL* airline loyalty programs - SPEND THE MILES!
Don't save them up for 'that one big trip in X years'.
Don't warehouse points in an airline/hotel program thinking they are 'safe'.
Always spend them at the earliest possible opportunity.
Or that company which runs LATAM status match also does manages status match for most global airlines and can tell that your United status is a trial and was not earned on merit ;)
I do hear that LATAM elites are treated very well when it comes to upgrades...
