Pretty lame from Qantas. FWIW, Jetstar at least used to book people's hotels here in Darwin if they were caught out by cancelled red eye flights. They contracted (maybe still do?) this company to do it for them: Travelliance

Are you trying Sydney? Just found this: Jetstar both ways and 52k points return + $290.94 taxes per person. Quite a bit of availability in December as well.

I saw some absurd taxes and charges before trying to get an award seat from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam for late December with MH... they were quoting something like A$1100.00 extra on top of the 61,500 Qantas points. So instead have gone with BA from Singapore.
