I did a dummy booking on the AY website and the QF metal flights are all AY coded so I'd imagine such an itinerary would not earn 720SCs. I'd presume you need a TA to book an itinerary with both QF and AY codes right?

Interestingly, I put an upgrade request through and it was not immediately approved. I thought if an award ticket in J is still available for the flight I would get the upgrade straight away? FWIW Expertflyer shows the whole cabin is empty....

Thanks for the replies. We have to arrive early to ensure little Texter is fed/slept so he is decent for the flight. Just a problem though - when does check in open? Does it open throughout the morning from the first SYD flight until both the MEL and second SYD flight departs?
