    The FR24 appreciation thread

It's not a holding pattern, per se. The fact that it doesn't hold over one position, but drifts downwind tells you that it's being done manually, by simply dragging the heading controller around. An FMC controlled pattern will always anchor to one spot. You can't actually program an orbit...

    Ask The Pilot

You miss the point. It's not a backup in case you lose your job. It's the backup in case the entire flying idea doesn't work out. And contrary to your experience, I know of many people who remained current in their qualification, in some many cases owning their own business. For instance, the on...

    Ask The Pilot

Something that really has to be emphasised is the cost aspect of this. It is seriously expensive, with no guarantee of an outcome. It's probably a depressing aspect of the whole thing, especially as I doubt that it has been considered by a teenager. Many of the people I flew with who had degrees...

Is Aussie Aussie Aussie an Appropriate Call in 2024?

It ensures we know who the bogans are, if, somehow or other, we’ve failed to notice them. After the flight they probably immediately went to the nearest supermarket, so that they could leave a few trollies in the car park.

Exit Row - Definition of “Willing and Able”

One of the things that always bugged me about people in these seats is that so many of them actually seem to take very little notice of the briefing, and to my mind would be just about useless. Of course that could just be me. I'm reminded of an accident in the USA, where there was some...

    Ask The Pilot

You ask a surprisingly difficult question, because there is no 'best route'....just the one that happened to work. Probably the best is the RAAF. If you can get into the academy (ADFA), and then pilots' course you'll have both a degree, and flying career, and you'll have been paid to do it...

    Ask The Pilot

I'm not quite sure how to write about Gary. He was just about my best friend, if such a thing exists. He really was the consummate professional. He was a ship driver before his pilots' course, and had a patrol boat command. He duxed his pilots' course, and was somewhat peeved not to be posted...

    Qantas Workers Go on Strike

They did, and that's what led to uncle Alan's lockout.

    Old Alliance Planes

Yes, true, you said Qantas….but if you’re not actually employed by QF, then does it really count. Divide and conquer was the aim…and it worked in many ways. Re the 787 sim instructor. Sim instructors are not company pilots. They’re generally contractors, who may, or may not, have actually flown...

    Old Alliance Planes

Ex QF group is not the same as ex QF mainline.

    Old Alliance Planes

That's an extremely unlikely flow. Jumping from the boiling water, into the fire.... Anyone leaving QF will move to someone like EK.

    QF A380 F seat advice

And I suppose you could always put the baby in the side bin..... K+F would be better.

    Ask The Pilot

Yes, 70 PIC, but with 250 ICUS. It would be a very cheeky FO who logged his normal flight time as ICUS. Ah...Ok. I guess you had to be there, and I'm assuming that you weren't. The integration was anything but a smooth process, and brought it's own hostilities with it.

    Ask The Pilot

Whilst I’m aware of that, it’s something I try to keep out of my mind as much as possible. Actually there often has been. But, because of the accordion-like nature of recruitment, retirements, and promotions, all short term opportunities tend to be followed by long periods of stagnation. 7...

I'd be very surprised if that is on widebody.

    Ask The Pilot

Actually the 400 pitch effects were more gentle than those of the 200/300, especially the rotation effect. If you wanted to see pitch couple, then the 767 was the aircraft to fly. I'm sure the system bashed that out of him. When I joined it was 1,000 hours, but they weren't all that hard on...

    Ask The Pilot

It's whatever the airline feels like calling it. Most don't have SOs, but they have new pilots who are immediately FOs. But, you'd never dream of leaving them by themselves, and they are very restricted in what they're allowed to do. QF's long haul FOs all needed to have a command endorsement...

    Ask The Pilot

I suspect that the end of Pan Am had less to do with the 747 than it did with management, and their decisions. In my time, they were never held in much regard.

    Last QantasLink 717 service

I have a friend who is a sim instructor on the 220 (and has 330/350 experience), and he agrees with you.
