One would think that the answers to eligibility are contained solely in the data within the booking system, and would not be a matter for judgement by QF or Deloittes. It will be a matter of running the queries to see where internally the flight was cancelled, but not removed from the booking...

I have had instances where one QF cabin is blocked by QF and therefore not available in EF. Probably when cabin largely full but leaving some wriggle room for checkin staff to manage any key issues (eg. babies/children).

There is no doubt 7hrs+ is a long time, When we faced this at BKK we got a room in the airside hotel for 4 hrs, and had a kip. When we had a long break in LHR we went into the city on the Elizabeth Line for 4 hrs. But Sydney doesn't have the facilities for in terminal rest beyond the lounges...
