This makes no sense when applied to my situation. Been with AMEX since 2008, spent less than $30,000 on the card this year and was offered 30,000 points to keep it. Agreed, so long as you aren't flagged by the banks during the application process as a credit risk.

I'm noticing that people here are reporting how much they spend on the card but not the length of years they've held the card - I wonder if this may have something to do with a (retention) bonus?

I've done something similar in that I've bought shares but not sold them (as per my understanding of the T&Cs). Completed this transaction last Friday so waiting to see when the points are posted.
