Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

This devaluation is an incisive example of the informal AFF adage that the only points with value are those that are spent. 20 years is extremely long and risky timeframe when it comes to a non-appreciating asset.

Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

It's mainly a matter of annual leave for me unfortunately. If I were retired I could definitely burn 4m KF in 3 years . Alas, that isn't always how life works!

Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

Even with my balance (and Pointy Bird's got way more than me), I'd pay $5k to get them doubled if it also meant getting a Cent as icing. However, since they proved a Cent doesn't automatically = doubling, I won't be risking it.

Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

We've seen on this forum that other people who have probably (to the best of my deductions) spent far less than you who have received points doublings. Plat Charge seems to increase the chances greatly. Extraneous factors such as years of loyalty, spend categories etc., don't seem to factor...

Points Count [How many do you have?]

Around 2.5m VFF, 1m QF and 2.2m MR (soon to be 4m MR prior to April 15 *cough*) and randomly, 8k in EY. Burnt 230k QF and 275k KF for a Japan stint later this year and applied for a plat charge to try and take my chances with a points doubling so the MR balance stays as MR. Don't like the idea...

QR Business Class lounge in Doha utterly appalling

I think the Al Mourjan lounge is a little bit overrated but it still happens to be one of the best business class lounges I've visited. In fact, it could even be that a first-timer might not know the best place to situate themselves given the sheer size of the lounge and thus may end up with a...

    RewardPay Alternatives

I literally cannot help even if I wanted to as it's @ferni's gig. They have to sign you up.

    RewardPay Alternatives

You and me both. Hence I have my wildly aspirational theory that they may, over time in the medium term reduce surcharges to more acceptable levels. Otherwise they'll be hit by a pretty big reduction in Amex usage - unless they're banking on the masses that don't care about points either way and...

    RewardPay Alternatives

Have a gander at the ATO thread - it's the talk of the last 5 pages.

    RewardPay Alternatives

Ferni's method is significantly superior with respect to surcharge - I've probably saved over 30k from the difference alone. Will pump through another 1.2-1.4m or so prior to April 15 and I guess it's time to smash the dragon going forward (unless better rates can be negotiated). Hitting myself...

200k to Singapore in Qantas J class?

Simply get them to use their points to book the award seats under your names. You can then either 'family transfer' them the points back or repay them some other way (the latter option being relatively safer).

200k to Singapore in Qantas J class?

QF Bronze/Silver members can only see J/F seats 297 days in advance, which is less than 10 months. Gold and above get 353 days in advance. If you know someone with QF gold+ status you could get them to look for you (and book if they're *cough* a family member *cough*)

    Amex D-Day Approaching (14/4/19)!

Keeping both my cards. As people have said, Amex have smartly engineered it so that they go from being well-ahead in 1st place to just slightly ahead...still in 1st place with respect to points earn. Cheeky. A certain fire-breathing card to handle all non-Amex expenses and Coles MC for the...

Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

Niceeeee. I should have done that earlier but don't think I'm going to risk it now given not long to go.

ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Given how Amex keeps harping on about how the deval will allow them to 'improve their merchant network', a reduction in the fees they charge might translate into lower surcharges for us. Could be a fool's dream, but it'd be hilarious if it worked out. Oh and @ferni's solution has been...

If one gets VERY close to Plat do they activate it anyway?

I can say that this has absolutely happened to me when I was at around 980 SCs.

    KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes

It could be the waitlist yeah. I haven't personally redeemed any escapes yet but I've done several dummy bookings a few weeks back (while daydreaming) and have had 56k J returns to SIN come up for me as advertised.

    KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes

You have to go all the way to the checkout page to see the actual price in points to pay.

Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

They are now a permanent part of the KF program which was announced alongside other (not so good) changes.
