    General Medical issues thread

Both my parents died of pancreatic cancer as well as one of my mother's sister. I'm hoping it's just coincidence rather than genetic.

Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Not sure if they are being delusional, but Hawaiian Air are selling tickets for the HNL - SYD flight commencing 2 December, 2020.

    2020 Travel Plans

We are looking at a Hawaii trip if we can sort out that pesky CV test so no need to quarantine.. Unfortunately in the greatest nation in the world they are not that easy to get.

    2020 Travel Plans

I did an overnighter this week flying from SAN to SFO. I feel so comfortable after this trip that I am not hesitant to book something else if I can find something that interests me at the right price. What was surprising was how full the flight was and how compliant people were with masks...

    TV series discussion {'ware Spoiler Alert}

Two really good documentaries on Netflix. First is My Octopus Teacher. Beautiful camera work with stunning underwater scenery. I never imagined how intelligent octopus are. Very informative and inspiring. Second is Last Breathe. Featuring a commercial dividing accident, what happened and the...

Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Had to listen to a family member mouthing off what a cough AP is because her mother is in aged care and she's not allowed to take her out for a drive or to the shops. I pointed out that was probably in her mother's best interest and if her mother was out and caught CV and died would she be ok...

Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I doubt if the Australian government has any real idea of the numbers planning to come return to Oz as I think most people who are more experienced at overseas life would figure that they will get themselves back. I had to go to the Consulate in San Francisco this week to renew my passport...

    Excess Points

Also should add my flights were booked within a week of travel, not game to go any further out. Those of us outside Oz are a bit fortunate in having more freedom. One reason we are not returning to Oz at this time is we don't want to be locked up by ScoMo.

    Excess Points

I booked my flights on Alaskan, flying SAN to SFO. Have to really monitor costs as first day I was looking first class was $449 and economy was $179. Two days later when I booked First Class was down to $149 and Economy was $99. I couldn't book fast enough as I was trying to convince myself that...

    Excess Points

I booked a domestic trip this week and as you say prices are a steal vs redeeming points. I did redeem points for the hotel but paid for flights.

    Excess Points

Definitely not buying any points no matter how good the deal might be. I probably haven't bought any points for 3 years or so, as the realisation hit that balances were growing quicker than we were spending.

    Excess Points

You know if I could get my head into the game of believing I am ever travelling again, I think I would plan 3 dream trips for the 2 of us, work out what miles I need in which program for flight, what hotels I would like to stay and how many points that requires then after that might go to a cash...

    Excess Points

We find ourselves in a similar dilemma, when is it enough points to start thinking about depleting balances in a worthwhile manner. Since CV kicked in I've been diverting spending to credit cards mainly earning hotel points as we now have enough for approximately 50 nights across multiple chains...

Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I checked on United for flights going direct from SFO to Sydney as think they are the only game in town from the US. Next available seat for purchase is 3 October and they are not selling economy seats on direct flights, it's business class fares only for $5,900 US.

Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

You are right it, the numbers indicate it is a proper mess here and it has forced us to live a much smaller life. Here in SD the numbers have been depressing, over 36k+ cases and 600+ deaths but you know on a day to day basis you just get on with life and don't think about it. It's annoying to...

Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Well we have lived overseas for 22 years in 3 different countries and have never registered our presence with the local Oz Embassy. We have zero interaction/contact except when we do a passport renewal and do not follow whatever social media accounts they might have. When we were considering...

    2020 Travel Plans

I was just thinking today that I am ready to make a speculative booking for 2021. However won't be involving purchasing any cash flights based on the experiences I've witnessed on this board. Accommodation will be done late in the game and will be done with big chains in the hope it minimizes...

Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I agree we are all free to express opinions. Personally I'm fine with comments on behaviour, however I do feel comments on their appearance is crossing an invisible line. My measure of what is acceptable behaviour is what would I say to their faces. I would not hesitate to ask them what they...

Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Is it not better for them to be overstaffed than understaffed taking into account numbers are growing daily? As it's a state by state management of CV who knows what's going on in the background. Maybe they have offered assistance to Victoria and were told no thanks. Are contract tracers from...
