Virgin Australia to lease more 737s

Spotted the white NHW in TSV earlier this week too, actually think it was the 2nd. Hopefully these all Y birds disappear soon - I have a couple of VA J flights booked for March and don't like this game. Still going to gamble with it though while VA are charging half the price of QF :p .

Virgin Australia to lease more 737s

Had a BNE - TSV J flight earlier this month downgraded from a 737-800 to an Air North (Alliance?) E190 with no J. Call centre moved me with no fuss to the 737-700 flight a few hours later, luckily one of the ancient ones with J. Seeing the new 700s on CNS routes is a worry, hopefully this is...

Booking as Avis preferred member substantially more expensive !

Coincidentally just completed an 8 day one way DUD to ZQN for a similar rate - $650 or so including ER. Wish I had a hybrid though that petrol price was a killer. Shame we can't share corp codes anymore as I have noticed in the last few years they ask for proof more often than not...

Booking as Avis preferred member substantially more expensive !

Haha strange hey - once we were staying in an AirBNB near Spencer St before an evening flight to PEK and it was way cheaper to rent a car for the day from Avis across the road than to pay for lockers for 4 suitcases plus a taxi/Uber/skybus X 4. We ended up going a bit past MEL for a rail trail...

Booking as Avis preferred member substantially more expensive !

Those prices are both insane with and without your code. I am seeing less than half that with our corp P***** code for intermediate SUV (compact doesn't show up with the code). Man that really shows the crazy gouging going on in the rental car industry at the moment. Although our ancient code...

Tokyo Haneda slot - How will Virgin Operate it? [CNS-HND flights ceased Feb '25]

Argh how frustrating when airlines don't care to read the rules - we are ineligible for ESTAs due to travel to Iran and I have previously looked into the Guam requirements too; I recall an ESTA wasn't mandatory for Aus passports but they used wording on the official govt site like "ESTA is...

Travelling experiences with armed soldiers and guards

Working in a hospital in south London in 2006 the local area had issues with gang violence. On Halloween there was an incident involving an Uzi at a nearby nightclub in Camberwell. The guys who got shot up and survived (I think one died) were held under police guard at the hospital and there...

Tokyo Haneda slot - How will Virgin Operate it? [CNS-HND flights ceased Feb '25]

A VA flight attendant told me last week she'd heard a rumour they were going to use 787s but she didn't really know anything. She was excited though and said she missed working the LAX runs.

Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Haha I declared dairy but also had some bottles of baby formula. The cheese and crackers are sealed from Australia though, but perhaps would still be a problem knowing how over zealous some of those officers can be. I am still mad they took my bulls scrotum mate cup from me at OOL 13 years ago -...

Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

1/12/22 VA118 ZQN - BNE 1655 3/12/22 VA379 BNE - TSV 1750 Both flights had the same menu; a choice of mustard chicken with mash and beans or a vege gnocchi. I had the chicken both times and it was quite tasty, wife had the gnocchi and said it was good but she switched to the chicken on the...

VA cancels all NZ flights up until NOV22

Bought a one way J fare ZQN - BNE - TSV for NZD780 in July for early December. Had to brute force the search by mucking with the URL for it to go through without error as wanted a two night stopover in BNE and the multi-trip search was broken. For comparison, this current sale is about NZD1080...

AirNZ direct flight cancellation - Syd to Rarotonga and no business class replacement

It would be great if VA returned to AKL - RAR, would be a nice alternative to LCCs NZ and JQ. Although the old timing of the return leg was a bit dire. We have an NZ A320 NOU - AKL coming up in a few weeks, booked via Air Calin as their code share ticket stock was a fair bit cheaper, but not...

Further Status Extension to 28 Feb 2023

Will likely drop to silver too. Also a bit nonplussed that in NQ there are no VA lounges now that CNS and MKY are closed. TSV lounge never built. That said I do prefer their BNE lounge over the QF Pub, they definitely have a superior beer selection 😁

Whats the most amount of flights you took to reach your destination

Not as crazy as some on here but once did TSV - BNE - MEL - PEK - ICN - ALA - ASB.

ESTA - "Authorization Pending" for 14 days and Counting!

Yes that is a huge PITA. I had to go through the visa interview process after a trip to Iran. Living in NQ our nearest US Consulate is quite far away in Sydney. Took a few hours of shuffling and waiting for a simple 30 second interview, basically they asked "Why did you go to Iran?" We replied...

"No award flights available" - Really???

Do similar controls apply on some domestic itineraries too? I recall a while back, 2018 I think, I booked an award ASP - BNE - TSV but our friends in Brisbane could not book the ASP - BNE as a stand alone award. Both online and call centre said no availability but seats magically appeared if...

Article: Why International Flights Are So Expensive Right Now

Ooh Tahiti - French Guiana would be an interesting route I'd be up for. I did do AKL-PPT-IPC-SCL a while back and that was a great experience. IPC - SCL also avoided the Chilean reciprocity tax being a domestic flight and it wasn't collected at IPC

Article: Why International Flights Are So Expensive Right Now

True, I remember being excited when I found a sale price in 2009 for ~$1400 on QF (but booked via LAN). I think the price was typically >$2k back then. For some reason I recall the QF service in Y was outstanding, possibly because we were served steak. Also direct to EZE and not SCL. Good times!

Unscreened passenger on SYD to MEL flight results in entire flight being rescreened on arrival

Reminds me of the old QFlink flights from CTL to BNE via RMA. Charleville didn't have security screening so pax were screened in Roma after already flying the first leg. Security theatre at it's finest.
