To update this thread and close it out, for reasons not entirely clear, CX were imposing a minimum 24 hour stop even though the fares had no minimum stay periods. If you stopped less than 24 hours it reprices quite significantly.

Have you considered Y into Asia and then J from there? Jakarta and MNL spring to mind. PR is usually the best out of Oz. Perhaps followed by Asiana if you wanted to do the entire flight in J.
