    Will ATC ever be automated?

Parts yes, but never fully (at least not anywhere in the near future). AI is both very smart and very dumb at the same time, and in the ATC world it's not just a case of mis-counting the number of r's in strawberry, or adding 8 fingers to a hand, it is lives on the line. Computers are really...

    Canberra dinner - Thursday 5 December 2024

That's Matt for organising, always good to catch up with AFF friends 🙂

    Ask The Pilot

Yes, we sure do (well meant to at least). Whilst I'm still student pilot, the standard pre-takeoff briefing I have with the instructor in the 172 is what we'll do in the event of an engine fire or failure. We talk about what options are available at what point of the takeoff, and that includes...

Article: Why I Send Airlines Compliments for Great Service

Yeap, I've sent in complements a few times. It's all well and good to complain as a form of feedback, but I also think there is something pretty powerful in saying, "yeah, that, do more of it because it was great". :)

Minimum time for Domestic to International transfer at Sydney - Separate Tickets

Which airport you connecting at, SYD? 1 hour 40 minutes is a quick connection, esp DOM-INT and on different tickets. Could you pull it off? Sure, but all it would take is for something not to go your way and you be stuck somewhere you don't want to be.

Needed to be said….Mentour Pilot discusses the fall of QF

QF bashing is almost a national sport, but there are likely to be very few people outside Aus who would care to participate. People outside Aus would know of Qantas due to their reputation of safety thanks to movies like Rain Man, and some may have even seen a Qantas plane, but that's it, and...

What is the statute of limitations on “never again”?

"Never Again" always needs to have a star next to it. I would say foreseeable future instead. Companies change over the years, and a once good company can go bad, and at the other end of the scale a once bad company can sort itself out. Whilst a particular airline might not be your first...

☕ What's your definition of "good" coffee?

Tastes good, not too weak, not too strong, made from good quality beans. I personally prefer barista coffee, when made by someone who knows what they are doing. I will drink pods (and do so at home), and pods are better than a bad barista coffee.

    Ask The Pilot

LiveATC has current ATIS for all major Australian airports, and smaller ones too. Free to listen to online or a couple of dollars to download the app. I use it on days I go flying before driving out to airport. Also has other frequencies so I can get an idea what other aircraft are potentially...

That's pretty much the feeling in the GA circles.

Would you 'raw dog' a flight?

If someone wants to do it, I have no problem with it. Each to their own. I'm not going to go "wow" or even give a "like" to any posts which someone claims they have done so, especially if that person only did it for the social media time. As far as obnoxious social media crazes go, I can live...

Op-ed: Airlines Must Take the Seatbelt Sign More Seriously

I certainly like the way QF treat the sign, on only when it appears to be needed. I've also seen other airlines which seem to keep the sign on virtually full stop. I've also got many anecdotes of pax behaving badly, and FA's being immune from turbulence, and whilst I was typing up a couple of...

Short turnarounds: Have you flown back from your destination with the same crew?

Yes, I did MEL-SIN-MEL with an overnight stop in SIN. The look on the FA's face when she recognised me was priceless. Had a good chat about what we'd each done during the 24 hours in SIN, and she then got me an express pass for entry back in to AU (this was when they were actually worth it)

Qantas to Schedule Airbus A380s on 8 Domestic Routes

Up until this point, this was almost plausible 🙂
