Always best to build in a good buffer when on separate tickets. Overnight has always worked for me (at least so far!) This "Y to Asia/J onwards" tactic is ALSO pretty good with two separately PAID tickets...far cheaper than OZ -Europe. Something to perhaps think about if Awards are not...
An extra bag, Lounge access, Priority boarding and security (where available) Preferred seating has never been a published *G benefit...of course you may get lucky at check in, some airlines provide more than published benefits.

Ive done a few "Y to MNL, J onward" trips on separate tickets, and have never needed a visa for the overnight in between. (AU Passport) Concur with the Belmont Hotel recommendation.
Already had a scan of the Passport page. The application took no longer than usual, but I don't recall previously having to have a "US Contact"?? Might be my coughty memory of course... 🤣 Lets see how long it takes this time, assuming approval!
