$1000 price increase since last year???

Im a lowly non status flyer who flies LAX - SYD once a year.
In looking at prices via ITA Matrix and on each airline sites I am noticing that prices have gone up about $1000 since last year. I am pretty sure I am comparing same dates and routes.

LAX - SYD
24/12 - 29/01

All prices USD
FJ $1362.94 via NAN
DL $1731
QF $2292 USD (last year was approx $1300 when booked Aug 3rd)
DJ $2012

Is anybody else noticing this? Did I miss a deadline or something?

IIRC correctly there was a price war on last year where prices were under $1000 some as low as $777.

I'm guessing as you are in the holiday peak the prices will be up too.

Ok, thank you. However I am comparing same annual dates- holiday prices last year vs holiday prices this year.

Lots of things can affect the pricing of airlines fares. For instance according to IATA the price of jet fuel has gone up 45.7% in the past 12 months. So I don't think you see prices as low as your last trip.

Also Qantas has their big announcement coming up on 24 August. So they might not want to offer any discounts on routes that could affected in case they have to make alternative arrangements.

I think you were very lucky to get the prices you did last year.

Before the price war prices were around the $2000 mark, during it they were down to $1000 or less.
Now they have returned to levels more like the original, except for various specials.
December 24 is peak period, so it is to be expected airlines will try to achieve a reasonable return.

The competition differences between originating from the US has been discussed else where but this is taking the mickey a little surely - originating from US is USD$1178 where the reverse sale price (taken from the Syd - Lax price) is AUD$1559.

thanks all for the replies.

I have done this trip the last 5 years on the same dates (24/12 -30/01) +/- 2 days.

Prices were $1500 - 1700 on QF. So I am comparing apples to apples.

A few things.

Supply and Demand - due to high AUD
Yeild ops are at work which relates to supply and demand
Alot higher price for aviation fuel
Lower prices are just not sustainable for any airline
