There doesn't seem to be a thread yet discussing BA's promos on buying Avios, so I thought I would start one.

There's a current sale on now with 50% bonus Avios when you purchase at least 2,000 Avios by 24 March 2022.

These kinds of offers seem to come around every few months. Could work out to be reasonable value if buying Avios during a 50% bonus and redeeming for short-haul QF J flights.

I looked at this for cheaper advance seat selection on my flight - you need to have at least 1 Avios in your account before you can buy points; I couldn't find a way to immediately earn a point.

I purchased 200k + 100k (bonus) avios on this promotion. Works out to be AUD5330, so 1.77 cents per avios. Plan to use it on Qatar Qsuite Europe to Australia for 90k which work out to be ~AUD1600 plus taxes (~300) one way. Now I have to find a departure city with minimal taxes either on Qatar Privilege Club or BA!

There's another offer on from 5-14 September.

50% bonus Avios when buying 2,000+.

I am thinking of buy at least the amount required for a return business class with Qatar via Sydney to Europe. I think it is roughly 180k in total. I am looking at going next year. Any thoughts ?

My main thoughts would be to check for award availability and check the taxes/charges first, to make sure that you'll actually be able to book something and to calculate the total cost. I would not generally recommend buying any sort of points speculatively if you're not ready to book now.

Thanks Matt.

I always get excited when these deals come out and worry if I don’t go ahead and buy the points there might not be another chance .

Unfortunately Qatar has almost Zero availability for redemption next may . I think there was a forum where they raised this issue but I am not entirely sure if it’s a temporary freeze ( due to the World Cup ) or something else .

Another idea 💡 I had was buying them and transferring them to privilege club. Does Qatar offer more availability for redemption via their website ?

One more question

How long on average does it take for points to get credited to the BA executive club when transferring from Marriott ?

Just looking at people’s experience

50% bonus on now, for purchases of at least 5,000 Avios.

However, the Avios subscriptions still work out to be better value now.

With the dollar as it is, I don't see a lot of value in this offer.
