Looks like the flights are proving to be very popular as many thought. I know we have a bunch of AFF members flying on them.

Maybe a lucky AFF member will be sitting next to the WA Premier… I wonder what class he is travelling :)

Will be interesting to see the mix of business and yield on this route when it irons out after a few months. Also the seasonality.

And hopefully this gives QF confidence to line up more Europe destinations, with Paris, Frankfurt/Berlin also on the cards.

Premier Mark McGowan to visit Rome as direct Qantas flights show strong demand

Premier Mark McGowan will make his first overseas trip in three years, heading to Rome in June.

The Premier has confirmed he will fly to Rome on June 25, on the new Qantas direct flights from Perth to the Italian capital.

Qantas confirmed this week the first direct flight to the eternal city, on June 22, was sold out and that demand was very strong for the service in the following months, indicating a pent up demand for travel to international destinations.

“The fact the first flight has sold out is no surprise to anyone and it is a strong vote of confidence in our city and our State,” Mr McGowan said.

But did he, the tax payer, or QF pay for his ticket? Will likley have many hangers on on this junket.
Italy does not buy iron ore or coal by the boatload.

QF sure know how to charge a premium price for a non premium product. I know some people are happy to stump up the extra for a direct flight but for the majority of Australians is still a 1 stop flight to FCO which can be done far cheaper on a decent airline

Wow so much hate still for WA 😂

But I would hazard a guess and say that friends relatives and tourists will be most of this market.

Inbound v Outbound I suspect would be more out of Australia and subsequent returns rather than the other way I think. That would be my guess.

Interestingly a friend in France knew about the flight and is coming home Paris-Rome (train break) then Rome-Perth-Brisbane to avoid Asia and the ME.

The Qantas Perth-Rome flights are still selling really well, with not only the first two flights now sold out but many others during June and July already looking extremely full.

Would there be enough people flying from PER to make this a success? Or are they going to funnel people from the Eastern states onto this service so its not really a direct flight?

From memory SYD/MEL-ATH was around 20 hours including a transit in SIN/KUL/BKK. It wouldn't be much further to FCO. I'd prefer to have 2 flights roughly same length then a short and ultra long haul flight.

And as you say there are alternatives.

It's not 'hate for WA', but a huge dislike of the way he treated all Australians for most of the time since c.February 2020. Ask some grandparents what they thought of being unable to visit the eastern states, or in reverse being locked out of WA.

Nothing would convince me to travel on this. Asian airlines a way classier option, and many have better equipment than the B789.
