Velocity Frequent Flyer launches partnership with DiDi

Not mentioned here, but Ola terminated service in Australia fully last week.

For those who don't have an AFR sub, here's the public Velocity ad for the Didi launch:

Also on their partner page:

1 point/ dollar for every ride (not just to/from airport)

And also 1000 Velocity points just for adding your VFF number in the Didi app.

Seems like a useful new partnership.

I just downloaded the DiDi app and created an account, but I can't see an option yet to add my Velocity details. Maybe the app still needs updating?

When I open my Didi app under settings, there is a heading " Velocity Pts" ...clicked on it and added my number....accts now linked and I got 1000 velocity pts for linking. Did it for +1 .... so now I have 2000 additional Velocity pts in total. ;)

Strange... I don't see that option at all. 🤷‍♂️

Perfect! I’ll take my 1000 points :)

Didi is good, they are often slightly cheaper than uber. The only issue is that Didi can take 2 or 3 times longer than an uber to arrive in some areas.

Tried it from MEL on Friday night.
No dice. No one wanted my trip to CBD, I had at least 5 cancels and 3 doing the dodgy accept but not moving. Shame.

There should be penalties for drivers doing that nonsense! Luckily that kind of thing has only happened to me twice.

Awesome free points.

Edit: I think there's an extra 1000 points for your velocity business account if you link that too.

This can happen from time to time especially if uber is surging. When that happens I sort of give up and go back to uber.

But on the flip side, there are so many vouchers with DiDi that I've had a $12 trip from Sydney CBD to the airport.

Are you in Australia at the moment? It might not be available to set it up unless you are.

I've always had way more problems with rideshare services in Melbourne than in any other city. I dunno what it is there but they all the drivers just seem very unreliable.

The promo probably has a limitation to AUS/NZ residents and for some reason the Didi app has determined that you are not one purely based on your current location outside of Oz.

Try again when you get home.

or VPN to Oz might be sufficient, unless it’s relying on geolocation (but there are ways around that also).

2 x 1K points without fuss ....
So far 1K into my VA FF account - that should extend my points for another year or so. Family pool another 1K in due course.

Another 1K into my VABF account but will need another 2K to meet the min 3K to transfer…🤨

1000 points into my account straight away - very happy.

There's a few more drivers in Canberra on Didi, so it will become an option other than Uber. While in Melbourne I've been using GoBlu-EV, and Uber for when they're not available. I'll try Didi as my fallback now.

I had that sort of issue at Adelaide a couple of weeks ago. The Uber 'surge' hit, which meant it was cheaper to take a taxi into the city ($42 Taxi vs $48+ Uber), and a lot quicker

Yay!

1000 points added immediately.

I hope Didi is better than Uber has been for me during the last year.

Uber regularly quotes three to five times the amount to travel from the airport to home than it does to get me from home to the airport.

Taxis have mostly transported me during the last year and at a much lower cost.

VPN & mock location (on android) still not sufficient. Shows the option to link but Didi will not recognise the mock location and says "cityid invalid -1" when I try.

Indeed I am outside of Australia at the moment - the app must be picking that up, even though I have a VPN running. Will have to try when I get home.

Annoying, but at the same time I'm kind of impressed that their app is clever enough to notice that and add/remove such options accordingly.

You want to know something more wild? The DiDi app doesn't work in China even though DiDi is by far the dominant player. Tells you you're in the wrong region when you try to access it in China.

It all functions off mini-apps in Alipay and WeChat.
