Qantas will add a non-stop service from Brisbane to Manila from 28 October 2024, adding a second option to the Philippines alongside the Sydney-Manila flights. (Shame about the timings, though).

At the same time, Qantas has announced that it will suspend its Sydney-Shanghai service from 28 July 2024 due to low demand.

SYD-SIN, BNE-SIN and SYD-BLR will also get frequency increases.

Details here:

QF has always struggled with mainland China, been dropped and reinstated quite a few times over the years.

Shame that the additional SYD-SIN flights are basically the same time as the existing flights, would have been nice to see a red eye SYD-SIN and day flight ex SIN.

I really hope Qantas or another airline starts considering flights between Australia and CEB or CRK which are both extremely better airports than MNL.

Whenever I fly CX/SQ to Cebu at least, there's always a large number of passengers connecting from Australia.

I’m hoping I can find a reward seat on MNL-BNE once it launches. Some of the other Asia routes have been really difficult of late.

I thought they would have had enough QFF corp traffic to make the route work.

When looking at the pricing from the other carriers, certainly is probably wise moving capacity elsewhere.

However wouldn’t it have been good to move that A330 and do something from poor old Adelaide!

Ok, I'll bite. How does this improve national security? What risk has been mitigated or reduced?
Less Chinese people coming directly into Australia, I know it won’t reduce much but a start especially after ABC 4 corners program last night… I am also saying the economy is not good in China too - hence the reduction of demand of travelling to Australia from China

If QF97 utilises the A330-200 arriving from Auckland at 17:20, another frame is still required to operate QF15 to LAX later in the evening?

I'll go out here on a limb and suggest racists are probably a bigger risk to national security than "Chinese people".

However you raise a good point. I'm sure Chinese government spy agencies won't be able to figure out how to get their operatives into Australia once QF cut this route. That'll have them fooled for sure!

Yeah - as the article says the "unfortunate timings" of the flight are really an aircraft availability issue of Qantas not having enough A330s and the duplication of the SYD-SIN flight times is again, not enough right sized aircraft, and the SYD curfew coming into play.

I'm assuming that PR has also struggled to recover from the Covid-era which has resulted in less capacity? If the Philippine Government ever got its s$%t together and rebuilt MNL airport as a decent hub, they would be ideally placed to compete with SIN and KUL as a worlwide hub and a gateway to the growing Philippine economy.

On Wednesdays, the new QF83 arrives in SIN at 19:05, but QF84 doesn’t depart (return) until Thursday evenings. Surely Qantas won’t keep a 333 sitting at SIN for 24hrs?

Possibly the same crew will operate it back, otherwise where does the crew come from if not a daily service?

🤣 🤣 🤣

TBH, would work better from MEL or BNE, but could be problematic for SYD due to curfew, meaning rather early arrival in SIN, especially during DST (4-4:30am arrival during winter, but 3-3:30am during summer).

Is your question about Air Sydney or other airlines that serves the *country of Australia* ??

SYD-SIN redeyes are a bit awkward though due to the length of flight and timezones. The only redeye I can see is Scoot's TR13, which departs 2045 and arrives 0310...

I agree a daytime return would be nice though, but I assume that's difficult for aircraft utilization.

Why BNE? MEL-MNL makes more sense, no?

I'm ok with the MNL timings. It avoids Manila traffic.
