Re Syd-Ldh which I've done 3 x....be aware accommodation in the warmer months say Nov to Mar is very scarce even at a year out....my last award trip a year ago nearly had to be cancelled due to difficulty in getting accommodation

Living in Canberra, MrsK and I take advantage of Ballina, via Sydney being just under 600 miles for redemptions. Flights with Qantas from Canberra are $700+ return - all on a Dash8, so using points is a good deal. Probably the only special 'deal' we can get from Canberra.

Some interesting quirks there in those award charts.
Do you possibly have anywhere any reference to how much does it cost to obtain points? E.g. how much would 10,000 Virgin Atlantic points cost, etc? That would help in estimating the total value of the redemption.

Good article but gee it's a pretty grim tell-tale sign that Qantas rewards are crumby when Lord Howe and Broken Hill are the highlight value redemptions.
To be fair though, Lord Howe is truly spectacular and well worth a visit and this comes from someone who has been to over 100 countries and all 7 Continents.

You can get Virgin Atlantic and KrisFlyer miles via AMEX, but for the other ones you'd pay ~$210/280/420 for the Alaska redemption (at 60% bonus), ~$387.5/650 for the Aegean redemption (at 25% discount) and ~$640/1116 for the United redemption (at 100% bonus)

Sounds like the Y redemptions are closer to the cash fares you might get on a good day but the higher cabins can provide great value if you are wandering around those areas.

I like the GA redemptions with VS points for 40k from SYD/MEL-DPS
If you buy points on special you can get up to 70% bonus points. Dependant on our dollar it’s about $28 per 1k points
