Article: How to Upgrade Emirates Flights with Skywards Miles

One of the most annoying things about Emirates upgrades is that when you book a ticket they tell you how much it would cost to upgrade your journey, but the price is for upgrading the entire journey. Upgrading each leg separately costs more (quite a but more) and if you are successful in upgrading two separate legs Emirates will not refund the difference as if you had upgraded the entire journey (they used to do that, but they don't any more). You cannot upgrade the entire journey online, or at check-in, or on board. The only way to do it is via the call centre, which requires both legs to be available for upgrade at the same time, which amazingly seems to never happen these days.

Having said all of that, using points to upgrade, especially from a Flex ticket, is a great use of Skyward points and I have never regretted doing it, particularly from Dubai to Australia.

Good explanatory piece, thank you. I am likely to lose Qantas platinum by a whisker this year because they don’t readily fly me to places I go. Looking for a programme to fly me into Europe and Asia from Sydney. Probably Star Alliance, not Skywards, but good to learn how it works.
