Was this the best option? Depends on the "rack rate" but not a bad choice.
What does Plat LVL get you? Increased room upgrade etc
He said he got a free newspaper? Likely true. It is a stated benefit of Plat (and Gold).

When he presents does he get an upgrade on redeeming points rooms or just when he PAYS for a room?
