My partner and I flew LAX - SYD a couple of days ago in whY and we were lucky enough not to have a 3rd wheel in the 3:3:3 configuration.

We had a very comfortable flight home... slept almost without distractions and we took turns to rest our legs on each other, making the trip more bearable.

This lead me to believe that when flying, we'd be better off buying an extra seat instead of buying 2 PE tickets... and still save some dollars.

Has anyone does this?
What happens to the SC/Points of the extra seat... would I be able to claim double Y points?

I would definitely go with 2 x PE - more recline, wider seat, more leg room, and better food/beverage. Much better than an extra half Y seat each. No brainer for me

2 PE seats is my recomendation

Having a little bit extra room is nice but an extra 1/2 a seat each doesn't allow you to lie down flat so I don't see the benefit

As mentioned by NM, better food/wine/service/quieter cabin (maybe) and the bigger seat with more recline is a much better option

Having faced the same decision when travelling in the past opted for Y+ and had no regrets even allowing for the extra cost.

I also agree - PE is a far better experience. The "extras" make you feel like you are almost flying J - cannot recomment PE enough - especially on QF! (way superior to BA and CX's offering)

To USA there is probably one answer (Y+), to Europe then there are other scenarios, like going in J all the way on lesser carrier (eg MH) or using Y to get to Asia and going in J from there. And surely it depends on relative cost of Y+ to Y seat, before making a decision. I just saw fares from Australia-London, $5.5K return on QF Y+. Do seasoned travellers seriously think this is good value? Same days MH is selling J for about $100 more, so I wouldn't consider Y+ worthwhile at all. So in this example your question becomes $11k for 2 Y+ or $6.6K for 3xY seats. Or the other options would be $4.8K for 2 Y exit row seats or $11.2K for 2xJ seats on MH.

Definitely PE - more legroom, wider seat and recline makes for a comfortable trip with VA

Yes, you are entitled to earn on 'Extra Seat' booking but it has to be done as a manual retro claim (and not all call centre staff are aware that its possible)

I can confirm that I personally have earnt status credits on several extra-seat bookings.

If you are WP and can select equal of row 3 Y all the way. You get J meals and drinks and more room, if not def Y+.
