Is it going to be the end of Qantas internationally as we know it? Is Qantas going to grow some balls and take on it's opposition?

Anyone care to make a prediction as to what is going to be announced in a little over a month?

I feel too depressed to make any predictions. We've had a tough few years - serious illnesses by Mr FM, GFC hitting my business etc etc. Finally this year felt life was normalising and all ready to resume flying (and more important sans ankle biters for the first time in 25 years) and now I wonder whether Qantas will even be worth flying.....

However (normal optimism resuming) - maybe it might be good. I assume Qantas is going to ditch even more routes to a combination of Jetstar and One World partners, so this is an opportunity to live on the edge and experiment with many other carriers :)

I agree with John.

A few changes may occur but I don't think they will do anything massive, maybe a few small things like service levels which only the frequent flyers will notice.

QF Int'l is doomed. The strength of the unions' grip on the workforce and Gillard's nefarious carbon tax will destroy the airline. May as well fly CX or SQ for better service at competitive prices with strong safety records as well.

Don't want to get into that debate, but my understanding was that the carbon tax doesn't apply to international aviation fuel - only domestic. And FWIW, fuel surcharges and other price hikes over the past couple of years have been been a little bit more significant than $3.50 a sector. Just saying that I'm not sure we can attribute QFi's demise to that particular issue. Tiger, on other hand... ;)

I do hope JohnK and ejb are right though.

they will finally release the details of WP1:cool:

airport parking voucher.
a hot towel when you get off the plane
and a qantas keyring. YAY!

When you arrive they hand you a jewel-encrusted iPad (to keep) which they have prefilled with movies, books and music generated by your Amazon and ITunes predicted suggestions.

And a complementary onboard creche.

Major emphasis on the reduction of it's cost base by:Creating lower cost hubs...Singapore...Shanghai?Employing local staff at local rates at new hubs Inc pilots , crew and maintenance.More code shares on OW partner metal.A general reduction on SYD as the primary hub for international. With their current high cost base they cannot compete effectively longer term with full service lower cost ME and Asian carriers...pity but a fact.

QF mainline will reduce ops to concentrate on USA/Asia - (BKK/HKG/PVG/SIN) and LHR, all other routes will be turned orange or culled. Some A330s will go Orange, others moved to domestic ops.

At some stage they will cease ops to HNL, MNL and others. J* already service HNL.

I also expect them to increase joint ventures, such as they have already done with Air Vanuatu, Niugini etc.

VA have successfully shown that this can expand their International network very quickly and at minimal cost, compared to metal purchase.

Qantas will start a Qantasia business based out of KLIA. With the aim of doing most of the Kangaroo hop flights. Most existing Singapore flights will eventually be moved to Kuala Lumpur. Similar to what Qantas do in NZ with Jetconnect but at a larger scale.

Although Jetstar will likely still keep their hub in Singapore.

This will start with a slow transition. With a mixture of crew between Qantas and Qantasia. For instance a Qantas pilot with a Qantasia FO. Like wise the some FAs will be based in KL mixed with existing ones..

JQ already due MNL as well.

Isn't this a good thing - less transiting aircraft back to Sydney for maintenance has to be more efficient.

A lower cost base can fund either less price increases, better service or lower prices. The current model isnt working and needs to change.

From Qantas benefits from Tiger woes - Inside Business - ABC

ALAN JOYCE: There's four - four pillars to the strategy that we're going to announce on the 24th August. First of all we're going to talk about the investment that we're going to make into the product to make sure that Qantas remains one of the top premium airlines in the world.

Secondly, it's looking at our partnerships. Thirdly, it's casting an honest and fairly aggressive view on the performance of the international network and making cuts where we need to make them and it's important for us to do that. And then lastly, it's looking in particular at the Asian market and seeing how we can participate in the fastest growing aviation market in the world.

Hrmm interesting....

I'll say this... I'd be worried if I was a QF Pilot (sorry JB747!!) When he was asked the question he simply said you'll have to wait and see for the 24 August....
