Hi All,

I have/will been doing an abnormal amount of flying this year, and have worked out that I will be 40 SCs short of qualifying for SG. Having never even qualified for PS before, I really want to experience what it would be like to have that kind of status.

  • I'm based in CDG for the next few months
  • I'm only free to travel on the weekends, and would like to go somewhere nice or interesting
  • I have 2x PER-CDG return trips planned. We usually get a TA to book PER-SIN-LHR-CDG (75 SC a leg in discount economy). If I could find a convenient routing which adds 10 SC per leg I could make the 40 SC without any additional flights.
  • I was not targetted for the recent double SC promotion
Any suggestions on what I could do to make these SCs would be very welcome :p

Have a look at fares for the weekend away on onewolrd partners.

Finnair has to Helsinki from CDG Z class fares from €285 r/t earns 30 SC's (& 2350 QFF points).

Maybe Madrid on Iberia, €160 earns 30 SC's

Royal Jordanian to Amman for €625 earns that 30 Sc's

Malev to Budapost for €185 earn 30 SC's and 450 QFF points.

and finally, BA to London for €176, 20 SC's and bugger all QFF points.

If I can add to serfty's CDG-LHR for €176, you'll almost certainly get the €100 ow upgrade to Club Europe offer (I think it's pretty much a standard offer these days - I've had two for two over the last 12 months). So that'd be €276 for 50 SCs and 625 points for a NB. Stay in a Hilton (I'm sure I've seen crazy London specials lately) and add another 2000 points (just change hotels).

Then again, if you have a whole weekend to kill, and haven't done Budapest, why not do their weekend special (it's been running since before Christmas, from memory, so not likely to end in a hurry): www(dot)malev(dot)com/luxuryexperience. My pick would be the 5 star hotel package and J return fares for:

€520 for airfares and 2 nights accommodation (€440 if you take the 3-star J class package) - the 60 SCs and 1743 points being the extra special bonus! (if you do it, let us know what it was like, as I've been sorely tempted to do ever since it was first announced)

EDIT: Just realized it was based on two people traveling, so you'll need to find a compliant play date. Can't be too hard, surely.

Thanks for the tips guys!

digga - The BUD trip looks tempting, Budapest is one of the place I'd like to have a look around. I'll let you know if I go.

serfy - I just looked up the ORY-MAD return flights on Iberia, and it is 117 EUR booked into V and Q class which is classed by QF as full Economy. That's 60 SCs for ~170 AUD, or $2.83/SC! It will be a bit more expensive to pick flights at more convenient times, but this looks like a great deal.

Btw CDG-BUD return earns 30 SCs in Discount Economy, 60 SCs in full Economy and 120 SCs in J.

I'd certainly recommend getting to BUD. I had a great week there back in 2005. If you don't do one of the deals I would recommend the Victoria Hotel. Great views from every room, rather affordable, clean etc.

Other than with JQ "Flex" fares, unless a segment is actually booked in Y class, Qantas will not give full economy SC's for international flights.

Someone clarified this in a recent (last 1-2 days) thread. There are some other fare classes that will accrue full SCs, but not many.

Only with "Flex" fares on JQ or Domestic QF ...

THis is ex-CDG so international.

A few that are full Y SC earn: ...
I'll reiterate!

Unless booked as JQ "Flex", International flights on economy cabin fares will not earn "Economy" SC's unless specifically booked in Y class! All other eligible economy cabin fare classes are considered "Discount Economy" for SC earning.

See this page: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Status Credits

+ For domestic flights within Australia, Discount Economy includes Super Saver (classes L, M, S, V) and Red e-Deal (classes E, N, O) fares, Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards booked in X class, and fares booked in G or Q classes. For international flights, Discount Economy includes classes B, E, G, H, K, L, M, N, O, Q, S, V and W, and Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards booked in X class.
# For domestic flights within Australia, Economy includes Fully Flexible (classes Y, B, H) and FlexiSaver (class K and W). For international flights, Economy is class Y. For travel on oneworld Alliance airlines or Air Pacific, Economy is class Y. For flights on Jetstar, Economy includes travel on Jet Flex fares. For flights on British Airways, Economy includes travel on World Traveller Plus fares. If you fly on a Flight Upgrade Award you will receive Status credits for the fare class originally purchased.

My understanding of the QF TnCs has always been the same as serfty - partner SCs in economy are only classed as Economy if booked in Y - every other class is counted as Discount Economy.

I believe that only applies to QF/JQ. :-|

The SC on other airlines is as per the link I posted earlier.

I'll be able to tell you for certain by the end of may when I have a B fare LHR-CDG and vv.

Don't confuse the points earning table with the SC earning table. They are different.

The points earning table is: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions

The SC earning table is: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Status Credits

The notes on the SC earning table are quite explicit

For travel on oneworld Alliance airlines or Air Pacific, Economy is class Y. For flights on Jetstar, Economy includes travel on Jet Flex fares. For flights on British Airways, Economy includes travel on World Traveller Plus fares.

It may have been that you were just lucky .... or things have changed ... general experience indicates the former is more likely.
