With that amount of tax & surcharge, you can almost buy another ticket, SYD-Shanghai is more than ADL. Unless you redeem J class from Singapore airline, otherwise their redemption is a joke.

Well redeeming Y isn't a joke, I know that most of us here know redeeming Y isn't great value (compared to J/F savers if available) but when comparing apples with apples, like SQ Y vs QF Y redemptions, then you can see which program costs the flyer more.

A simple Sydney to London one way in economy, say May 2, example:-

SYD-xSIN-LHR with QF (a380) will require 64,000 and $372.08
SYD-xSIN-LHR with SQ (a380) will require 40,375 and $371.88

Now, let's say we want to go to Paris .... getting there with SQ will be the same points and taxes, not to mention requiring only two flights from OZ .... versus QF which is three flights if via LON or if use their partner like CX and it will require 75,000 points and around $350 in taxes.

I can see that many dislike taxes, just like I really don't like them, but when comparing apples to apples, I can see which program is more value for money/points ;)

You are absolutely right, if we only compare with points burning ratio, then SQ is far better than QF. However, redemption ticket not only costs your points but also certainly amount of taxes, apparently government & airport charges are part of it, but more than $500 fuel charges..., I don't think so.

But SQ are not the only one with fuel surcharges. ADL-SIN-PVG is a particularly bad example. Every FF program has it's dogs in terms of redemptions points required and/or taxes./fuel surcharges, and part of the whole "game" is to find the best outcomes, and that's where AFF comes in handy. QF still have $430 in taxes/fuel surcharges for ADL-SYD-PVG. At the other end, take the example of ADL-SIN-HKG it's only $450 in taxes on SQ (and 47K pts) vs ADL-SYD-HKG being $440 in taxes (and 72K pts) on QF.
