I received a postcard in the mail from Amex today with an offer of 5000 bonus points. The terms and conditions state that "Participation in the promotion is by invitation to Cardmembers who receive a personally addressed direct mail invitation for the promotion as nominated by American Express. Eligible purchases must be charged to the specific American Express Card as stated on the direct mail."

After registering for the promotion I called Amex as there is no indication on the postcard I received or on the website when I registered whether it is for the Platinum Charge or Platinum Reserve card. After she checked I was told it's for the Platinum Reserve card.

"Look forward to a great return at the new-look American Express Travel website.

Dear Ken1,

Most travellers have to wait until they're on holidays to feel rewarded. Now you can enjoy the benefits long before you take off. Every dollar you spend on hotels, car hire and experiences at americanexpress.com.au/travel will earn you an additional Membership Rewards point on top of the 2 points you already earn. Plus, as the named recipient of this postcard, if you register and make your first booking before 31 January 2013, you'll receive 5000 Bonus Points.

But the benefits don't stop there.

At the American Express Travel website, it's simple to find the best hotels, flights, car hire, cruises and experiences at the right price. We've scanned the world - and thousands of our travel partners - to bring you a host of special offers and privileges. You can even use your points to settle the bill at the checkout. So where to next?

I have also just received a postcard. Mine gives the last 5 digits of my Plat charge card.
Now to hire a car for a day!

Bah, when I try to register it says "this promotion code is not recognised" or something like that. I wonder how they're deciding who to target it to?

In my case someone who was previously putting over $40k a month through the card and is now spending $0 and letting the card die a death!

is that enough ????????????????????????

It seems to be. I booked a "holiday experience in Hawaii for about $200 as I prefer my Hertz spend to go to AA, so should be 5400 points earn.
It's pathetic scrounging around for a few thousand points after previously earning so many Amex points through ATO spend.
Amex's loss is Citi's gain!

Looks like I've got 14 days to book the cheapest thing I can find

Has anyone who made the qualifying spend on travel by January 31 had the 5000 bonus points added to their account yet? I booked a hotel on January 28 and the extra points per dollar were credited but the 5000 points haven't shown up yet. Amex say it can take up to 8 weeks but I've found the bonus points have come through within a few days on other promotions I've taken part in, like the Westfield 3000 points promotion recently.

Has anyone been successful to have received the 5000 bonus points or is it going to be another case of calling the wonderful plat call centre

Mine haven't come through yet. I called Amex yesterday, which was 7 weeks after I made the hotel booking through the Amex website, and was told to call back next week, after the 8 weeks have passed. She was sure they'll show up by then, but we'll see!
