Just came back from a trip. The ticket was paid for using Membership Rewards points, and saw a $7 charge from Travel Service Fees Pty Ltd.

I have a feeling it's related to that ticket because when I tried to do a dummy booking in the Travel section of the Amex site, a $7 fee with the letters YRI shows up under taxes and charges.

Can anyone shed some light on this charge? Tried googling. It looks like it's some payment system linked with Galileo...

If you booked a flight via MR points, you have the option of haivng it all deducted from you points or splitting it. I have done it in the pass but i can't remember what it comes up as, I'll need to check my statements

Did it involve a flight departing HKG?

It was a SYD-MEL flight.

No splitting. All using MR points.

Will call Amex later and find out.

I would suggest that you flew virgin, bought something from them and paid for it using your card.

Yes I did fly DJ on the way to SYD, but from memory, in the past the transaction comes up as Virgin Blue Spring Hills or something.

So maybe it's Virgin Blue after all. Just a bit of coincidence seeing a $7 charge when I tried the dummy booking on Amex.

No it wouldn't be Virgin, their would come up under their company name.

Travel Service Fees is a payment system used by travel agents to charge a clients credit card for service fees, where you don't want to charge it inhouse, primary when you've charged the clients card direct to the airline and need to add a service charge be it at time of booking or when making changes etc.

I'd suggest perhaps Amex is using TSF and are charging it this way.

You can always challenge it with your bank, though not sure its worth the time for $7.

Might wait and see if a Virgin Blue charge comes up later.

Thank you all for the responses.

Saw your title as I had the same $3 charge on my bill and couldn't explain it. You guys were right. I was flying DJ and bought a cup of tea for $3. Was surprised at the time that they lowered their cc limit from $5 to basically nothing. So, yes, this explains the charge. Thanks.

I can also confirm that a $2.50 charge for a bottle of water on a recent DJ flight came up under this description on my AMEX.

I used my Amex to purchase something on-board recently, which showed up as "TRAVEL SERVICE FEES PT MELBOURNE AU". However, when using it for live2air, it appeared as "VIRGIN BLUE INFLIGHT E BOWEN HILLS AU".

Having said that, I have used my Visa on-board also to purchase food (least year, before I had my Amex), and the charge showed up as "VIRGIN BLUE FOOD & BEV FORTITUDE VA"

:)
