Our friend Amex is doing it again. I got the flyer from Amex. This time there are two promotions from American Express:

For $60 voucher
American Express Network > On The Card

For $30 voucher
American Express Network > On The Card

You need to register your card and make 8 transactions from selected places (that you choose from a list available) by 19 April 2009. Then you get either $30 or $60 Coles fuel voucher depending on your choice.

Good luck and start transacting!

It's locked down well from a T&C's perspective, so Amex have learnt their lesson!

The Program starts on 23 February 2009 and ends at 11:59 PM ET on 19 April 2009 and is available to Cardmembers 18 years or older with a valid Australian consumer American Express® Credit or Charge Card only issued by American Express (an "Eligible Card") and who received an email or direct mail invitation to register in the Program

Also, enrollments seem to be capped at 3000.

Well it doesn't hurt to try though :) Let us know if you can register it.

Yes capping at 3000 participants is definitely a good thing from Amex point of view, at least they can cap the costs!

That is for the $60 Coles fuel voucher promotion.

Enrollments are capped at 6000 for the $30 Coles fuel voucher promotion.

Well one cannot complain as this is a "bonus" promo. It has apprporitae T&C and tighter rego etc.

However after the "riches" of the mistake Everday Promo, this promo is a more effort for smaller award. It is also no where near as generous as say the 2008 Xmas electrical stores promo.

It would look to me that this time Amex are more testing how small a "bait" can be used to modify behaviour.

Still all "donations" are gratefully accepted.

Though is there anything I really need from The Good Guys?

I received a promo for the $30 voucher from Amex, problem is there is no Bing Lee shop in Victoria .So a waste of postage & time by Amex, maybe they should do a bit more market research,Is 7 out of 8 o.k for Victorians.

ACtually, you are choosing 2 out of 4 sets of 4 available stores, so you don't have to choose Bing Lee, or The good Guys, etc.

American Express Network Promotion > On the Card > Frequently Asked Questions

7. Is there a minimum dollar amount required per purchase?
No. You can spend as much or as little as you like on each purchase.

13. Why is American Express doing this program?
American Express wanted to create a fun way to tell Cardmembers about the many places they can use their American Express Cards. As more and more merchants accept the Card, we want to ensure that Cardmembers are aware of every opportunity to use the Card for their everyday purchases.

23. I wasn't aware I had this card how do I find out more.
If you are unsure about your American Express Card you can ring Card customer service to find out more on 1300 736 659 available daily from 8am to 7pm Sydney time or contact us online by clicking here

G. Changes to this Agreement

We may change or modify this Agreement, including Program features, from time to time by posting such changes or modifications on the Program Site. If you do not cancel your participation in the Program within five (5) days of a change in the Program, or if you use the Program after a change in the Program or to this Agreement, you agree to such change and its applicability to you.

L. Miscellaneous Provisions

If any part of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid and enforceable according to its terms. The failure to enforce any term of this Agreement on one occasion shall not prevent enforcement on any other occasion or the enforcement of any other term. Headings and captions shall not be considered included for purposes of interpretation or application hereof, but are for convenience only.
At least there is no minimum spend per store.

Seems to be similar reasoning behind this promo as the other one.

NB, How does someone not know what Credit Cards they own?

Also, I wonder why they're saying that some of the terms & conditions may not be enforceable?

I would not mind betting that L/ has come about due to the Everday promo where Amex got so many things wrong including the T&C that it probably weakened their case to try and enforce anything.

Protecting their butt! In some cases there have been instances where a particular item in the T&C has been ruled invalid which has led to the invalidation of the whole thing. It is a fairly normal clause these days.

seems to be a lot of work to get either 30 or 60 dollars!

Yes..though in my case I would spend at 6 of the 8 required stores anyway within that period with no altered spend.

So it is only two "extra" trips in my case.

So for $60 that is ok...but not great.

Also as it is not coughulative it just does not rate compared to the other Amex promotions.

On the whole this promo seems largely pointless to me in terms of creating new business for Amex as it is mainly just pushing the larger companies where 99.9% of Amex Cardmembers would already know that they can use their Amex.

One could speculate that Amex is in part just using this promo for other purposes.

Say:
  • to "test' new registration procedures for promos (get in wrong here and it only costs $30/60 per head...get it right here and maybe save thousands per head in other future promos)????
  • given some strange clauses on knowing what cards you have to just try and determine what cards are being used (remember that some people have free Amexes and these may be dormant)???

You cannot register for this promo if you were not invited.

Out of curiosity, I just tried enrolling for the $60 voucher. Put all my details in and hit register but it came back saying it could not identify my card as I had not been invited.

They've definitely got this one sown up tight!

It Seems it is well locked down to invited peeps only ,, ahh well , no harm trying

I got an invite today for the $30 offer - however, am unlikely to qualify for the promo based on spends and not really wanting to go out of my way for $30.

Interesting promo though.

Got the invitation letter for the $60 promo. Register online but have not got a confirmation email or SMS. Call up CS this morning and confirmed that I am on the promo. Hope that everything will be fine.

I think I use my Amex card too often I don't get targetted for any promos!

Must start using Citibank Plat more!

Or using it in the wrong type of stores. ;)

The only 2 promotions I can remember is a phone call offering 50% bonus MR points on the Gold card for 6 months and then a postcard for the MYREWARDS promotion in December only capped at 10,000 MR Points.

does opting out of stuff exclude you from promos? I wonder if I accidentally opted out of promos cuz I never get them?
