Going through an old travel bag and found a 30 page "Qantas Schedules and fares" booklet, December 1 to December 31 1970. Seems to cover worldwide info on all flight schedules and fares.

Exch. rates= 90cAU = 1USD and 2.14AU = 1GBP

Syd-London-Syd = F $1950.20 Y $1240.20
Syd-LA-Syd = F $1261.50 Y $900.00

At many of the International Qantas stopover addresses an asterisk denotes "Australian Centre or Corroboree Room"

As I said, useless information, but to me at least and perhaps to others, interesting to remember when .....

Not that is was even born then, but i reckon it would be an interesting read! doe sit have aircraft type? It would be good to see how the routes have changed..

And does the "Australian Centre or Corroboree Room" the precursor to the Qantas Club????

Jan '71 was my first o/s trip, forgot there are others who would not have been born then !! :o

Seems the aircraft types include 707+(VJet)/737/DC8/V10.

Schedules cover, Kangaroo/Southern Cross/Wallaby/Fiesta/Far East/Pacific Islands...routes and other services.

I guess the airfares look cheap and compare to airfares of today but it would have been a lot of money to pay back in those days.

Interesting to note the difference in airfare between First Class and Economy. What were the differences between products?

Based on UK inflation over that period the A$1940 would now be $22,000... Looks like air travel really is cheaper (in both price and product)

Very interesting. It is interesting how little the difference is between F and Y.Though F in those days was different. My first "OS" trip was in November 1969 flying SYD-POM-LAE-RAB-BUA-HIR-POM-SYD.
The sectors SYD-POM-SYD were on TAA and did have an F.I remember well thinking that as the fare difference per sector with a student discount was only~$10 that I could drink that much's worth of beer-easy-just remember i share a birthday with Boony.Cant remember the aircraft type on that sector.
POM-LAE-RAB-BUA-HIR was also on TAA but the DC3s on that run were definitely Y only. The HIR-POM sector was on Fiji Airways and an HS-748.I was the only pax on that sector,Y only but they granted me an open bar.
The HS 748 was in use in Australia in No 34 squadron as VIP aircraft until 1996 and No32 squadron as trainers until 2004.Also were in the Fleet air arm.
More useless info, thanks jandj for posting.

Cheers folks. Looking at the invoice from NAB travel for the 28 day trip (1971) SYD-HNL-LAX-SFO-VAN-HNL-SYD $675 (air only) so there would seem to be a bit of discounting even then. On Qantas and CP Air.

Thanks for your trip reports drron. Always a great read.

Thanks for reminding me of my first "overseas" trip, drron! Back in 1971 at the tender age of 14, I was lucky enough to accompany my father when he flew MEL-BNE-POM-GKA-LAE-MAG-WWK-MAG-RAB-MAG-POM-BNE-MEL on business. My memory fails me, although I suppose the flights must have been on TAA. I do recall that the PNG sectors were all on F27s. The "territory" had quite an impression on this lad from the 'burbs of Melbourne! :)

F seats of the early 1970s would not pass muster for international business class today. Probably about the equiv of Premium Economy these days. Food service was probably a bout the equiv of modern business class - perhaps a little better. No IFE.

Note that the flights to London and LA would have been B707 aircraft, so we are talking single aisle with the cross section about the same as a 737. F would have been 2x2 seating.

Another price conparison is I'm pretty sure my parents paid about $1000 for their first bliock on land in the early 1970s. (2 blocks of land or F to the UK?)
