I have managed to accumulate sufficient points for a business class flight to Fiji and then later in the year to Singapore. What hints can you provide in terms of making these bookings. What potential problems are there that I need to look out for? How can I make sure that I maximise use of my points.

No real advice. Your difficultly will be finding availability.

Use the ‘multi city’ search on the Qantas page with ‘flexible dates’. This will open a calendar with all the classic awards shown.

The higher QFF status you are, the better your options.
QFF NR ie red, at the bottom of the pile so to speak, means things at that tier happens last, upgrade opportunities, check in queues access to premier/premium lanes, etc.
Its hard if your points are earnt from non flying activities.
The more you can show QF that you have earnt points by flying, ie higher QFF status, the better.

The lowest status with Qantas FF is Bronze (aside from not being an FF member at all). Virgin Australia Velocity's equivalent is Red.

Heh, yep, indeed NB.
Overexcited to show off.
My excitement is show I know something.
Sorry, and ta for that, Flyingfan.

Yes, indeed, with 150,000 points earnt on ground activities.
OP might be with that, but hasn't confirmed.
