Having just flown in from SYD, I noticed a Qantas 747 sitting on the tarmac at 2000hrs, not at a gate.

Very rare to see any 747 in ADL so what gives with this one?

I can't answer that, so this is off topic but you got me to wondering...
I was told yesterday about a truck that got bogged in melting road Tarmac in this heat wave, ( melbourne) possibly due to not being driven carefully enough, but I was still surprised that could happen.
Are there any similar issues with very heavy planes landing in such heat?

Its OEG doing the Antartica charter tomorrow.

Thank you both for your answers. I did ask the crew on my flight and they didn't have a clue.
Casually mentioned that I would post on AFF and get an answer almost immediately...... and I did x 2 :)

I was so tempted by that trip. But the cheapest seat was $1200 which gave you a seat in the middle of economy and no seat rotation. Can't imagine you'd see a thing.

Yeah... for many years I've coveted "that trip" which runs from MEL SYD also on various occasions. If noting else I figure it would be a cool casual answer to the Monday morning questions at the office... "What'dya get up to on the weekend ?" "Well... lets see... Saturday I mowed the lawns and tidied up around the yard a bit... and yesterday I went down to Antarctica" and the just walk off to get a coffee like it was nothing :)

I agree though about the pricing and the service offerings. For my money you'd have to go in one of the two-abreast seats where you get to stay in those two seats, either window or next to window. For me the price to sit in the middle and

Back OT... I travel back home to ADE regularly from MEL and yeah... the biggest you'll see there these days is a 777 or A330. Been a long time since I lived there but I seem to remember the runway extension / diversion of Tapleys Hill Road was to allow "big" aircraft to take off fully loaded from ADE to Asia/Arabia. Is it just the evolution of bigger/stronger/faster/better aircraft that means 777/A330 have taken the place of 747 in this region ?

Think I heard this take off while picking up a child from a birthday party sleep over. I was chatting to the mum at the time so couldn't run outside to look.

There is a regular* SQ cargo 747 that visits ADL. So the limit is not 777/A330, just the bigger aircraft are rare.

* well noticed it a few times over the last 6 months or so.
