Well in addition to being a fan of flying, I’m also a big fan of motor sport (and not just for watching the crashes). Admittedly not as much as my dad-in-law who has dedicated a full room to motor sport memorabilia, models, pictures and other such stuff.
Given Bathurst is quite close to Canberra (only a 650km round trip) we once again made our yearly pilgrimage to the mountain to watch the race from the side of the track. So I brought the tickets, laid out the appropriate attire (you know, the sort that makes you a walking billboard for certain car related products), and set the alarm for 3 am.
The drive up is about as pleasant as driving at 4 am with minimal sleep can ever be (I can never get to sleep the night before Bathurst), with a quick stop in Cowra for brekkie we arrived at the mountain (Mount Panorama) at 7:30am, just in time to catch the last of the V8 utes doing their thing.
We picked a spot near the lovely named “Hells Corner” (first corner after the start line) where we could both see the track, and see the giant TV screens, and yet far enough away from the loud speaker of the PA system that we would still have some remnants of hearing left over at the end of the day.
The race itself had a disappointing result (what else can I say, I’m a Ford fan) but it was still enjoyable none the less. With exception to the first lap, the race became most interesting during the last hour when all the drivers really started pushing their cars rather than simply “doing laps”
We drove back that night, stopping again in Cowra for dinner and getting home about 9:30.
In all, it was a very enjoyable day which I’m looking forwards to repeating (hopefully to watch a Ford win) next year.
