Qantas will tomorrow begin offering Internet and email connectivity on A380 flights across the Pacific, but only for first and business class passengers.
The eight-week trial on six of its superjumbos between Sydney and Melbourne and Los Angeles follows completion of preliminary testing. The aircraft for the first time will be equipped with technology enabling passengers to access theInternet via Wi-Fi enabled laptops and personal devises.“The eight week trial will give customers the opportunity to access the Internet in exactly the same way as a terrestrial Wi-Fi hotspot in which customers can pay with their credit card and surf the Internet, including the use of email,” manager customer experience Alison Webster said. She added that Qantas will become the first airline to trial the service on direct flights between Australia and the US.It will only be available for first and business class passengersand will form part of Qantas' "ongoing strategic evaluation of connectivity options".

What a great way of separating yourself from the competition in J and F class across the pacific.

Can imagine it'll be a big drawcard for suits who's bosses want to stay in constant contact, be interesting to see how successful it it.

So let me get this straight - i pay $10k for a business class ticket to the US and then find that Qantas haven't sucked enough money out of me and they want to charge for internet access - they really are dropping into LCC land.

I realise it's only a trial, but I hope they don't bring it to marked with only a 35MB allowance.

Don't have a problem with internet access - great idea, well done Qantas, look forward to it. But charging business and first class passengers for the privilege - come on, they've got to be kidding

At least the trial is free whilst they review demand.

I look forward to trying it in 4 weeks time on route back from RTW.

Nice to stay in touch esp. when you lose a whole day flying home

The way the article read it said F & J pax would probably get some or all for free.

So can we post here? If not then it's not worth having.

Who will be first to post here from the flight and how will we verify it actually came from the A380 in flight?

Post a pic looking out the window mid-flight, holding your BP in front of the camera... but do we really trust that little? ;)

Well boasting rights are always good. I will do it just to say I have, maybe my penultimate email from from travel series.

And of course posting here is essential. :)

I wasn't aware of any airlines that offer inflight wi-fi free even for F or J pax.

On AA it won't work unless you're within 100 miles of the coast, not on 757's or 767's & not under 10,000 feet.

Do we know exactly what dates the trial runs? i will be flying out on QF11 on 1/5/12 so hope the trial is still running then.. im sure i will use 35 meg in about 20-30 mins of email but it would be good to play with while its still office hours in Sydney.
