I was browsing the AA website the other day and came across this. Seems that you can effectively buy upto 3 times the miles you are about to fly.
Just wondering at what rate can the miles be bought at ? The same as usual (i.e., 2.75c + $35 + 7.5% tax) ?

Also, can you purchase these miles if you've already hit your 60,000 annual purchase cap ?

What are others general thoughts on the Mileage Multiplier ? A goer or nah ?

Cheers

The rates vary based on route, but as per the FT quote:

There are so many ways to earn miles and with Mileage Multiplier, your miles will add up even faster.

For example: Fly AA from Chicago O'Hare to Dallas/Fort Worth and you will earn 802 AAdvantage base miles.

Or…increase your mileage balance with Mileage Multiplier:
*Opt for triple miles and receive a total of 2,406 miles* for only $53

*Opt for quadruple miles and receive a total of 3,208 miles* for just $79
* Total shown includes base miles earned. The Mileage Multiplier product is currently offered at a rate of approximately 3 cents per mile. Prices shown include 7.5% sales tax, which is applied at time of purchase. Prices/offers are subject to change and cancellation.

That's putting quad miles at 2.46cpm. The sample also suggests it's around 3cpm all up (not to mention you're actually only paying for 3 times the points as 802 are included in the base fare so it's bumping the price up to 3.3cpm). No mention of if it applies to your 'purchase' cap but I can't see why it would (they're not calling it a points purchase, they're calling it a 'multiplier').

Not great value, but seeing as what you can redeem AA miles for, it is possible that you could get some niceness out of it. You'd be better off during the bonus buy miles get miles free promos.

That's true although I wasn't thinking of going for the Multiplier instead of buying during promos, more in addition to especially as I will probably max out the annual cap during promo purchases.
Cheers for the info.

problem with this is that you can only do this when you are actually flying AA. Unlike the United maximiser where they give you an option to buy additional miles as soon as the trip is ticketed. You buy the miles and then cancel the booked trip within 24 hours for a full refund. The price does vary with UA (according to FT can be as low as 2.1cpm)

It also works that way for USDM. from memory the cost for the multiplier is not too bad with US but of course YMMV
