I know it has been posted before but I cant find the answer. Can someone pl clarify if AA first class domestic earn QF first status points, even if booked through instant upgrade. Due to less flying this year I am looking to attempt my first AA status run.
Any suggestions from LAX, SFO or YVR in August?

It depends upon the specific fare bucket each segment books into.

As long as a segment books into F, A or P fare buckets it should earn First Class SC's and "Cabin Bonus".

Fortunately, this is normally the case with most such YUP's booking into P.

However, you need to be VERY vigilant when booking as some segments may not book into one of these classes. (Especially when booked shortly before travel).

AA is upfront with this and you can easily see the fare bucket for each segment before booking (unlike Qantas).

Thanks serfty, much appreciated
As its the first for me I need to be very careful.

Note that flights out of YVR will only get business class status credits at best.

Also be aware that KUPP/YUPP fares sometimes book into A,F, or P on one leg, but Y on another (eg a flight SFO-LAX-SAN, where there is only a single-class service LAX-SAN).

In that instance, first SCs would be earnt on the first leg, and full economy on the second.
