This is a bit of a strange one.

Went to MEL last night and parked on level 2 of the Qantas side of the short term car park. Just after the disabled car spots, there is an abandoned brown (I think) Commodore with no plates, caked in dust so thick that what appears to be many people have written/drawn stuff on it with their fingers over time.

I thought this was unusual, but the person I was with said that they vaguely remembered seeing the car months ago in the same place.

Surely a bit of a security risk, particularly with recent events about people going missing from the MEL car park? Has anyone else seen the car I'm talking about? Would have though they'd have noticed it by now and towed it, especially given how rampant they are about cars that stay at the pickup curb for longer than 10 seconds ...

You would be surprised how many times a car is left in similar circumstances, in fact in one thread it was reported a SYD airport tour even visited the depot where they store such dumps, apparently a lot of tourists buy cheapies then just leave them after their travels.

When I was working at the Rescue Coordination Centre at SYD many years ago I parked on the street where the old police station was located, came back after the shift to find myself parked in by a car behind me, noticed the wiring hanging out of the ignition and promptly went to the police office, it turned out a cheeky crook had dumped his stolen car outside of the airport police station!

What surprises me then markis10 is the fact that despite being in the same disgusting, clearly abandoned state for so many months, this one hasn't been removed from the car park? Can they just not be bothered?

Surely the lost revenue from that occupied car park must make it commercially critical to move the thing? ;)

Maybe they dont have the power to move it, not sure what the lcoal laws are but they do vary a bit!

I'd agree with that..... I know around here there are notification attempts that must be made and wait times built in before any "abandoned" vehicle can be removed....

Still.. sounds a bit odd.....

From what I've been told, it may have been there for over six months. :!:

In any case, odd is the word. Thanks for the feedback guys, seems burueacracy / monopoly works in strange ways. ;)

Easily been there for over 6mths, edging on a year now i reckon. I know which car you are talking about though!

I remember a similar sight in SYD domestic short term about 10 or so years ago. There was a Magna, not that old, parked in plain view. It was also caked in dust and all four tyres were dead flat which indicated it had been there some time. Can't recall if it had plates.
Now with Macquarie owning the parking and everything at SYD it would be moved quick smart. They'd protect the most expensive parking spaces in Australia (at airports anyway) as much as they could. $48 per 24 hours!

Perhaps the owner found it more economical to abandon it rather than pay the parking fees! :D

Couldn't you use to park at the Melb LTCP for as long as you wanted to at the price of only 14 days? Or have they always charged "per day thereafter" the 14...?

I remember reading that there was a space near bne airport that backpackers and the like just leave the rust buckets they bought for travel.

They just buy the car , and hope it works long enough to get around. I think the airport ended up selling it for scraps

What lost revenue, while that car is sitting there it is earning them, what?, $48 per day. they can collect when the owner returns.

Surely that’d only work if it couldn’t be traced back to you, otherwise they might force you to pay them

Being traced wouldn't matter, you only have to pay on exit. ;)

I might go steal the brown car, the fees after 6 months are bound to be cheaper than QF Valet after 5 days...

:)

Mr!

Well actually, I'm looking for a cheap car to leave parked at ADL for 4 days a week. I'll do a drive up get ticket and reverse out and you get the car, use the ticket, and save money.
