Really loving this forum. Great advice and discussion. Helpfully you can help with my upcoming travel question. I am about to embark on a rtw economy trip which I haven't booked yet: mel-paris-nyc-lax-mel. I would like to pick the best frequent flyer program.

I was a member of united mileage plus but absolutely hate flying with United and any other north American airline (I am happy to stand corrected if there is a good one out there). It was great to reach gold back in the day when I was flying a lot but redeeming points with united sucked.

I have no Qantas status but a few Qantas points (16k). All foreseeable travel will be economy so any plan that would give me high earning potential on ecomomy tickets, free upgrades and perks like luggage allownances would be great.

The next trip planned after the rtw will be to China (Beijing) so it would be nice to either get that trip for free, free upgrade or status to make that trip more comfortable. I don't have many trips planned after that but hopefully there will be lots more to Asia, EU, US and around oz. Any travel in the foreseeable future will be paid out of my own pocked so will be ecomomy.

One strategy was to sign up for the Aegean program to quickly get gold status. I am a little concerned about being able to use Aegean points for other airlines. Also wondering if there are better options outside star alliance including the small ones.
