Hi,

I told a friend to sign up to Qantas Frequent Flyer but completely forgot about the (easily avoided) $99 sign up fee and they put in their credit card information however apparently the form still didn't process.

Will Qantas refund anything if it does go through if they're asked?

Possibly. They could also try doing a credit card chargeback - I don’t think Qantas bothers to dispute chargeback claims relating to the joining fee.

Clause 5.5 of the Terms and Conditions:
New Members may, before they use their Membership and within two weeks of receiving their Membership number, notify Qantas Loyalty that they no longer wish to be a Member. Qantas Loyalty will then cancel their Membership and refund any joining or other fees paid for that Membership. Otherwise, Membership is non-refundable and is not transferable.

I'd be a bit surprised if the bank accepted this as grounds for a charge back.

Not saying that the bank accepts it or not - just that my understanding is that Qantas generally doesn't dispute claims relating to the joining fee.

The bank would have to accept the dispute to initiate the chargeback? It would seem fraudulent to request a chargeback for a legitimate charge you agreed to.

Moot point however as membership can be cancelled FOC within 14 days.

If OP's friend does want to be a QFF member, I think, maybe email QFF and ask.
I mean, in 1997, I think it was $25 or so to join, grin, I have had a relationship with QFF for that long now.
For a lifetimes worth, of "benefits", is it worth quibbling over $99?
Granted, and yes, I do realize that there are free ways of joining QFF.
