It seems that over the past week or so Accor has changed their policy on how Accor points can be used in connection to a discount from bookings. As late as last week, prepaid bookings including red hot room deals wouldn’t allow you to redeem Accor points for the usual 40 Euro discount per 2,000 points. Instead, one would need to book a flexible rate to redeem those points.

This for me is a big deal as I move from making flexible pay at hotel bookings to prepaid bookings now that travel has normalized, mostly.

No change that I’m aware of (unless it was a limitation with Accor+)?

I’ve used points and pay for years, including pay in advance sale rates. At participating hotels, you’d get the option to use some points and lower the prepay cash amount.

Edit: there was a change a few months back where you can now use your points at checkout to settle all or part of your bill (at participating hotels). Obviously not if it’s already prepaid.

Interesting! So are you saying that some hotels only accept using Accor points to settle flexible bookings whereas others allow for points to be used both pay in advance and flexible rates?

No.

Only some allow points to settle at check out.

Although there are some member / discount rates that are pay at hotel (but have a one night cancellation fee if cancelled X days out). So it doesn’t have to be the rack rate to use points.

Using points to partly or full prepay a stay has been around forever. Perhaps there were some chains that didn’t do it but all the core ALL Accor participating hotels worked that way. Ibis, Novotel, Mercure, Pullman and Sofitel.

Using points on prepaid rates has been an option for ages. The issue has been that hotels configure which payment methods they will accept on certain rates. Given that the hotels don't get the full 40 Euro, they sometimes don't set up prepaid rates to accept using points as part payment.

I obviously don’t pay close attention to every Accor booking I make but the option to part pay is there more often than not but certainly not on every hotel or rate.

Pretty sure it’s more consistent in Europe (as you’d expect).

I had a weird experience in BA a couple of years ago, prepaid the MGallery Recoleta (USD and points). I think they couldn’t see the copayment and thought I needed to pay the diff. I have a vague recollection that they reversed the points and charged me…but I may have paid less in the end…
