Adelaide to Singapore V Adelaide to Beijing ? Why is it cheaper to fly to Beijing on the same plane that stops in Singapore ? Is the Beijing leg subsidized by China?

Same reason why it's usually cheaper to fly from Australia to UK/Europe than Dubai

What is that reason?
Airfares aren’t based on distance. They’re based on the maximum the airline thinks it can get for each seat, for specific city pairs.

Most passengers prefer to fly direct. So the price on Singaore Airlines non-stop to Singapore is going to be high. However, they can’t sell every seat at that high price to Singpore. They need connecting passengers.

To make the ‘one stop’ flights attractive, they sell it at a cheaper price. They want to price their fares via singapore at least competitively with the airlines flying non-stop.

That explains it. Works out well for me as I'm not stopping in Beijing but transfer to a S7 flight to Irkutsk. Cheers
