Advice on Changing Leg

I had an issue recently that seems to be common where a slight change on a QF domestic leg resulted in me losing my international legs on QR due to Qantas not re-ticketing the itinerary on time. After some back and forth on the phone I managed to get my seats back and the trip ticketed.

This was booked using points in July for travel in April 2023 and we have a 1 hour 20 min connection time between our ADL-MEL arrival and our MEL-DOH departure. The minimum connection time has since been changed to 1 hour 30. I have no problem leaving earlier from Adelaide, in fact I'd feel much better about it if we were on an earlier flight however I'm extremely wary about calling up to change after the issues I've already had.

What should I do here, get on the front foot and see if QF can put me on an earlier flight then hope they re-ticket the trip in time? Alternatively could I book an earlier flight myself then call to have them cancel the later flight and link the new?

Any advice would be appreciated, once bitten twice shy with these rewards bookings..

I'll wait for someone else to chime in, but anecdotally from reading quite a few threads on this forum, Qantas staff will usually happily put you on a earlier domestic flight if you turn up to the airport early, provided you're connecting to an international flight.

Unfortunately I don't have the threads handy, but you can probably find them with enough searching.

edit: here's an example Changing QF domestic connection to international partner award flight: wait until airport check-in?

I had a J reward booking SYD-BNE-LAX with 1h 25m connection time earlier this month. I just rocked up to the service desk and asked to be placed on an earlier flight and she did. When transferring at BNE I met someone travelling in economy with the same original flights as me and they said the check in person proactively moved her onto earlier flight without her asking.
