Advice on Qantas FF Points

So I've just contact Qantas to see if I can use my 200,000 off points to upgrade to Business on a Qatar flight. I was advised that I can only use points to upgrade on Qantas flights. Is this correct?
I've only really flown Qantas internally before and upgraded those times, however I've got a really good deal Melbourne - Rome then London - Melbourne.
Above flights have not been ticketed yet until I confirm with the booker.

Any advice on best utilising my points for business class upgrading would be very much appreciated.

The only way to do this is to travel on a Qantas flight. Even an EK flight with QF codeshare can't be upgraded with points.

I was hopeful that the information I was given from Qantas was incorrect. One cannot be so lucky .........
The prices for the Qantas flights are almost double the price for the Qatar flights & I'd rather spend my $ in Europe than on flights.
I've not taken so many flights this year and am not likely to keep my gold status before my membership ends on 31 Dec at this rate & I'm not travelling to Europe until April 2016. Would you recommend me using my current points for flights this year to boost up my status points so I can retain Gold and at least use the lounges when I travel in Europe?

Yes, only Qantas flights can be upgraded with points. But QF points can be used to book a classic reward seat on Qatar (and other airlines) outright - subject to availability.

You would probably be better off using your QFF points to book awards outright rather than using them for upgrades.

Status comes pretty much from paying to fly. Classic Award redemption will get you a flight. But no status.

With 280K QFF points you could book a multi-stop Round The World ticket in business class on One World Airlines including QR via QF.
