Aegean’s Star Alliance Gold status is earned after just 20,000 qualifying miles. And they are even giving out 1000 status miles just for joining.

Gold status of course brings lounge access to Star Alliance network. Does United have similar to AA's YUP fares, as first (F,A classes) accrue 300% miles if posted to Aegean.

Note: all of this is my interpretation of reading A3's website

It's excellent value if all you want is simply *G and nothing else. It will be interesting to see how it all goes when A3 is merged with OA, of course (and the resultant airline is assumed to still be part of the Star Alliance). OA's FFP has two status tiers as well, but the qualification criteria are a bit higher.

Some people in the BD program might find A3 more accommodating compared to the inevitable LH program.

A3 is less generous crediting miles for particular *A partners. For example, UA First credits 300% miles, but US First only credits 150% (very different to BD and LH). SQ only credits 160% for Suites and 150% for First, but everyone kind of knows that SQ is pretty stingy. Only some other select airlines give 300% for First class.

As for the rest of the classes, most look pretty standard and in some cases there are less non-credit classes compared to BD or LH. All mile earns are subject to a minimum mileage as well.

As for burning, the awards chart for Star Alliance carriers looks a little steep compared to BD. According to A3's website (or at least how I read it), awards are redeemed flight by flight, e.g. if you fly from LHR to SYD and you need two flights, you need to work out the mileage required for each flight separately, then add the two costs together. (A flight in this case is tracked by flight number). As far as I can see, no cash+points awards either.

Redeeming for A3 flights seems considerably easier and (on first sight) cheaper.

As for elite benefits, A3*G get a couple of benefits when you depart from ATH, but otherwise all other benefits are standard *G benefits.

Aegean Airlines

It appears to be 20k miles in a fixed-12 month period, i.e. 12 months since you enrolled. AC, TK and OZ seem to have similar or better options for *G. No mention of lifetime status.

25k for an Oceania-Oceania Award in Economy, which appears to be sector-oriented, as per anat0l's post.

I was thinking of lounge access more than anything else. Maintaining gold for following year requires even lower mileage...16k or so.

On the other hand, 4k miles for *S is very low. The most notable benefit of *S is free checked baggage on all *A carriers in the USA.

A nothing if you don't travel to LOTFAP, but there you are.

Personally I think OZ's might be better for those wanting to keep star gold, you have 40k to get star gold but you have 2 yrs to do it in. status then lasts a minimum of 2 yrs.

Even SYD-IPC?

IPC is not served by any Star Alliance airlines. In fact, they have included countries such as Tokelau which doesn't even have an airport!

What about flying to Pitcairn Islands?! Haha!

You're right. I just got excited looking at the list of islands and mentioned Easter, being the furthest from Sydney. SYD-PPT may be an op but I stand to be corrected, again.

OZ mileage earning power is less than BD and A3, though, so it is a little bit more difficult to get *G status this way.

Something I forgot to consider yet is mileage expiry as well as earn/burn power. OZ and AC have 7 year expiry on their miles. LH and TK have 3 years. I had to do a bit more searching than desired, but A3 miles don't expire "as long as the account is kept active".

Just an observation...most programs seem to have three to four elite levels for airlines whereas Aegean has just the Blue and the Gold levels.

That's about right. SYD-AKL-PPT is served by NZ. In fact, AKL-PPT serves long haul J by NZ which is great, and will keep J even after the conversion of A320s to Y only (AKL-PPT is on B767).

Just spent a bit of time analysing the different options since it does seem quite certain BD will be in Miles and More next year some time. I think Ill move to Air Canada, the 35k per year is not bad and includes a couple of nice perks like systemwide upgrades that could be used on AC out of SYD or anywhere really. Might actually make me book a few AC trans-pac's.

OZ redemptions are mileage based. So their redemptions are good for hopping around Europe, e.g. LHR-OSL-FRA-CIA-ATH-VCE-MUC-MAN with stops in every city would cost 45k. Extend this up to 10k miles for 55k. Oneworld doesn't have as much of a presence in Europe, compared to Star Alliance. I think there are something like 11 airlines that service Europe, and you could theoretically fly them all on an Asiana award.

A3 miles are better for long haul hops within a region, e.g. AKL-PER or AKL-PPT. Doesn't appear to be good for SYD-AKL-PPT unless you spend 50k in Economy. :(

See here:
Miles & Bonus program is sector oriented. The passenger redeems for every flight number the miles corresponding to such flight. Flights with an intermediate stop having one flight number e.g. Rhodes – Rome via Athens, shall be considered as one flight.

those s.w pacific awards exist in many programs, AC, SQ, BD. On SQ its 35k return in J for east coast to PPT via AKL. think its the same with AC

For SQ it also applies to west coast to PPT via AKL (eg PER-AKL-PPT) for 35K in J.

That should be pleasant trip in J...6+ hours PER-AKL followed by AKL-PPT. Maybe worth my flying Syd-Per vv to make such trip for cost of 35k krisflyer miles.

In theory, PER-AKL-PPT on J for 35K is the biggest bargain given that both sectors are long haul NZ products, even though it is not Business Premier. I tried SYD-AKL-PPT on J twice on SQ award and I enjoyed every bit of it. Their service and food is excellent.

AKL-PPT is 5 hours for and 6 hours back so you are getting like 22+ hours of flying for 35K for PER-AKL-PPT.
