From what I've heard from friends other than cheap rates aerolineas is a pretty average airline syd-Buenos Aires..at least it's not qantas announcing an exit!

So there are no longer any direct flights between Australia & Argentina?

Nope. QF to SCL and LA to SCL (via AKL).

As someone who works regularly around South America it's a little frustrating to have so few direct options, but it is what it is. I'd heard whispers by LAN cabin crew on a trip last year about a direct SYD-LIM flight, but never heard another word about it, so figured it was just someone's wishful thinking.

Interesting, in the other direction SA have axed their JNB-EZE flights from early 2014 as well. I guess the economics are difficult to make these routes work with ETOPS restrictions meaning you are stuck with A340 or 747 as the only aircraft that can operate the routes (oh, plus the way too big A380) without major diversions (like VA used to have on MEL-JNB).

LAN and QF will be pleased.
As it is, fares from Australia to South America are already expensive...Aerolineas leaving the market won't help this altho. I've also heard that the product and service aboard Aerolineas leaves a lot to be desired....

Argentina is a kleptocracy. Is Aerolineas state-owned?
Yes, Aerolineas is state owned. Putting the politics aside, Argentina is a great destination to visit. I had a fantastic 2 weeks in Argentina in 2010 (flew on the now defunct direct QF Syd-Eze service), visiting Buenos Aires, Iguassu Falls and Patagonia. Throughly enjoyed the steak there!!:p Some day I will go back to Argentina as Ushuaia is the starting point of most Antarctica cruises!

I fell out with them 30 years ago when they wouldn't accept their own currency on board - USD only.
It was a long dry flight.

The decision to pay $7k+aud qf/lan to SCL -v- 3.5kaud.. aa to EZE was/is really a no brainer(ImnsHO) .
AA is sus in terms of in flight ambience (sic).. but there is also an increasing sense of unease about the much lauded safety standards.
Lovely country and lovely people .. but the plot seems to be thickening .. blue rate is trumps for currency , the lan war @ eze is messy, the malvinas issue is messy , the political situation is messy…corruption is rife…

Sad news. I did BNE-SYD-AKL-RGL-EZE-SCL return in 1995, my first long-haul. I seem to recall Aerolineas Argentinas was one of the last airlines to permit smoking. Pretty foul, but the beer was copious, and as one of a large group of exchange students on-board I had a great time. What I would like to see is a transpac link Asia to South America. As a points flyer with South American aspirations, I only hope things get better in the Asian century.

1995 - I remember being handed a tray of mini bourbon bottles ( 12 or 16) and a few of cans of coke to share with my friend. But those horrible leather seats....

Funnily enough, when I went to Antarctica (via Ushuaia), it was LAN that was on strike, not Aerolineas. I was stressing about making down there on time and had started looking into how long it would take to catch the bus from BA (some 60+ hours IIRC). Fun times!

I'm lucky that most of my work has me flying in and out of MDZ. There's worse places in the world...Sadly I can't drink or eat meat anymore, but it's still a stunning part of the world :)

I know this throws into jeopardy the world cup plans of many as AR were one of the only reasonable solutions to get there and apparently AR haven't been that easy to contact to make arrangements and changes.

I immediately discounted AA for its reputation. Could have made a world cup trip affordable but wasn't willing to break the QF cross Pacific route.

Luckily I didn't make that choice and just abandoned trip. QF will have a bonanza now. Would Emirates perhaps see an opportunity?

Emirates already fly Dubai to South America direct (I met a Brazilian engineer in the Dubai J super-lounge who was returning home from working abroad -- East Asia to Brazil via Dubai). At the time I was amazed there wasn't a better route for him, but he insisted that was the easiest, and perhaps in hindsight he was right.
