Ever been in an aiport lounge and wondered if there was another AFF member present? Want to meet new and interesting people with common interests to while away the hours when waiting at an airport?

Then do I have the app for you! Introducing AFF Finder...

I've been working for the last couple of weeks on an iDevice app to allow AFF members to locate and display a list/map of other AFF members in their immediate vicinity. The current version allows each member to set a messsage ("I'm in the back corner of the QF lounge" or "I'm wearing the dodfy golf shorts and a pink carnation"), with the intention of later versions introducing a basic messaging/chat function.

I'm very close to the point where I need to start Beta testing the app before releasing it on the app store, so if you meet the following criteria then I'd appreciate it if you could send me a PM and I'll respond with more detailed information.

* Own an iDevice (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch)
* Plan on visiting a reasonable number of airport lounges in the next couple of weeks
* Are willing to install the app and run it each time you visit an airport lounge for the duration of the Beta
* Are willing to provide feedback on the performance of the app
* Are willing to provide suggestions of what could be done to improve the app

At this point I'm looking at opening the Beta to around 10 people, who will all receive a free copy of the app for participating.

Thanks in advance for those who are selected and contribute to the testing.

Disclaimer:

I have been in contact with admin, and have his full endorsement for building and releasing this app. The app will use your AFF username and password to validate that you are a valid AFF user, this data will be stored locally on your iDevice and will not be visible to me or anyone else (You will have to trust me on this for the Beta, Apple will enforce it when I release the app to the AppStore). Location data will be stored on a secure server and used for no purpose other than to locate and display a list of other AFFFinder users in your immediate vicinity.

Grumble, grumble, toil and tumble. What no BB version? Puts on steel helmet, flack jacket, shouts "Incoming" and hits the dirt. :p

Wow, sounds like Grindr (PS - if you are at work, and don't know what this is ... do not search), but for AFF members. A great idea! (And something that can be ported for other uses).

The only iDevice (an iPad2) I have sits in my drawer at work, and gets an airing about once per week at most. So I'm not a candidate tester unfortunately. But if you start work on an Android version ... let me know asap!

And without the photos of knobs ...

I should have mentioned that I will be getting on QF8 in 12 hours, so I'll be incommunicado for 16-30 hours (depending on whether we get diverted or not!) after that, so don't get upset if I don't respond to a request to be a Beta tester straight away.

I'll be interested too. Still got weekly flights planned..

Pm on it's way

Unfortunately knob pictures are not allowed anymore.

There's already a feature on the AFF iPhone app for you to leave 'foot prints' which kinda does the same thing

Umm seriously? Unfortunately?

Is it? I got the impression (not having used grindr) that with footprints you log in and leave a foot print whereas with this sort of app you get a push notification if someone is near?

Sounds like a great idea... I'm more than happy to help out with beta testing.

The makers of Grindr now bring you Blendr. (Think, a Straight version of Grindr).... Still don't google it at work.

Not really push notifications (as you'd get a fair few!) but when you log on you can see a 50 people that are closest to you. They are arranged from the closest (usually ~80m away) to those further away.

Interestingly, if you live in hotspots (like Kings Cross or Darlinghurst, or any nightclub) the top 50 will be within 10m - if that!

Yeah, it depends on where you are. You get quite a few at Sydney airport. When I was at longreach the closest person was 1000+km away!

On some of my flights now, after we land and everybody turns on their phone. You hear the ping from Grindr and everybody looks around trying to find who they think it might be. :D

Everyone?

I do feel this discussion may have been *slightly* drifting off topic for a bit there.

Anyhow, i have an iPad and will be in at least one lounge a week (maybe 3 or 4) over the next 3 or 4 weeks. Happy to be involved in beta testing providing it isn't inadvertently going to accidentally start connecting to Grindr.

BTW, is this has to be one of the few places in the world where i can reply to a message worried that only 1 interstate flight/ airport lounge visit a week might not qualify as "a reasonable number of airport lounges".

Equally scary that many of us will read your comment, nod that 1 lounge visit in a week is low and totally agree....

I'll probably have 2-3 lounge visits a week for at least the next 4-5 weeks, but what are the chances I'll be at the same airports at the same time as any of the 9 other AFF members doing the beta testing? (Considering 4 of the lounge visits will be Melbourne Int F, Bali domestic Priority Pass, Lombok domestic Priority Pass, and the Bali
international Prada lounge!) Happy to participate but it might be more a test of not being able to find anyone?
