Hi.

My girlfriend is a 5th year medical student who needs to start planning her 6th year elective for 6 weeks in late Dec-March 2013-2014. She cannot leave prior to 27th Dec as she has to be a bridesmaid for a wedding, which mucked up my Niseko 2014 plans slightly. Anyway...

She isn't a fan of the cold so we were thinking equator/southern hemisphere, and the current front runner is Bangkok. She is looking for a developing-developed country rather than complete third world health infrastructure and is particularly interested in neurology. But, she has no leads so far so would consider any options.

My reason for posting on here was to see if anyone had any good suggestions or even potential contacts, especially in Bangkok/Thailand. BTW, responses are open to anyone, I just wanted to grab the doctors' attention. Feel free to PM me too.

Thanks!

Many many years ago I did my elective in Singapore..... had a great time, everyone was friendly, keen to teach and show you stuff. I did a combination of neurology and radiology.
The advantage of Singapore for me was
1. all the tutors would discuss issues in English
2. the nurses/doctors would help with translating for patients who did not speak English
3. the food
4. overall safety
5. first rate health care (with no financial limitations of technology) (I had friends who went to Africa - packing all sorts of medicines, iv equipment and fluids for themselves due to the fear of HIV..)
The neurology department had an acupuncture unit (plus traditional chinese medicine unit) attached to it. Managed to pop in to a couple of sessions. So had a bit of eastern medicine exposure while here.
Went through the full repertoire of radiology possibilities as well.
You could do as much as you wanted or as little as you wanted.

I think the most important bit is to have fun, be keen and you shall learn.

I did mine in Kuching, Malaysia. Could pretty much pick and choose what you wanted to do at the hospital. Heaps of UK elective students around too, so there's a good social network.

Neurology was kind of interesting - I did a couple of rural outreach clinic things, and there was plenty of tertiary syphilis to be seen. Certainly not something you see in Aus/NZ on a regular basis.

Happy to give contact details (the admin fee is RM100 which is nothing compared to what most other places were asking for!) or answer any questions.
