Hello all and welcome to a trip report of our trip to Europe...your hosts will be Adam (myself) and Emma (the prettier one)

This trip report was only a dream just over 12 months ago when I stumbled across the US Airways thread on FT and more importantly here on AFF. I always promised to do a trip report as a 'thank-you' to all the members that helped with all the question's I asked, you were all so welcoming and I now find I visit this forum on a very regular basis :)

Anyway...Emma and I talked about going to Europe when we first started seeing each other, I said I'd only go it wasn't in Economy... now she won't go anywhere long-haul in Economy!
Approximately 11 month's out and after reading various forums for many hours over many weeks I finally called the US Airways booking line (via Skype of course) and spoked to a lovely lady in their call centre. I had already researched our flights with flight numbers, times etc I gave these out to her, had a freindly chat and a great experience overall... much better than others have written about! My girlfriend and I had now booked our trip of a lifetime! Our route was to be the following:

Outbound: MEL-SYD-BKK-CDG

Inbound: FRA-ICN-TPE-BKK-SYD-MEL

And then we waited.. and waited.. and waited.

After counting down the months, weeks and finally days it was time to leave. I left work around lunchtime on Thursday 5th July, went home... finished the last little bits of packing, loaded the car up and put the cat in his carry box! Dropped him off at the boarding cattery! (Nearly didn't pick him up after seeing the bill on the way home!! Could have bought more miles :D) Next stop was back to work to leave the car and get a lift to Melbourne Airport, dropped off kerbside with our luggage.. 3hrs earlier than planned!

I had booked a QF J Award MEL-SYD. Being 3 hours earlier than our ETD and being aboard a 737-400, I went to have a chat at the QF service desk and with a very friendly lady she moved us onto the 19:00 service... A 767 to boot! A quick bite to eat in the Business Lounge and then a run to the gate with approx 10 other passengers and we were seated, ready for takeoff.

Arrived in Sydney, then waited in the cold and wet night for the Sydney Super Shuttle... there was nothing super about it! Super slow, super uncomfortable and super organised! Checked in at the Holiday Inn and was upgraded thanks to PC Platinum status, nothing to write home about... 7hrs sleep. In a cab to the airport!

Arrived at the international terminal... nervous as all hell! Did I have everything? Did I need Visas? What if they can't find the booking? Bugger it, we roll up to the Thai First Class check in counter, hand over our passports and receive our boarding passes straight back. I look at Emma, she smiles back... I have a huge sigh of relief!

Off to the AirNZ Koru Club, we grab a bite to eat and I get more excited as the minutes pass by. Emma and I talked about going to Europe when we first started seeing each other, I said I'd only go it wasn't in Economy... now she won't go anywhere long-haul in Economy!

Soon to be sitting in the nose of this old girl!

I must admit we did get a couple of strange looks being a younger couple but took it in our stride.. and turned left! Once settled, the amazing onboard service commenced, way too much food and plenty of alchol (FWIW, we are not big drinkers). Life was pretty good at this stage.

We arrived in Bangkok, and were greeted with the infamous 'Thai Buggy Grand Prix'. Jumped on board and watched BKK airport whiz by.

Soon enough we had a ride through the Business class lounge into the First class lounge, grabbed a private room and some food and relaxed. But there was more relaxing to do... a 1hr Massage of course! Off it was to the the Royal Spa, a very nice massage was had and only a short time now before our flight to CDG. I was pleased to see it was the 777 and we hadn't been TG'd!

Your's truly! It was a spur of the moment shot.. can you tell :D

Once again, service was amazing 4/8 of suites occupied and off it was to Paris!

A good 6.5 hours sleep had on this leg.. not a hard thing to do!

We arrived in Paris a little beofre 0700 and caught a cab to our apartment accomadtion. A lovely 4 days spent in Paris... I lasted 2 days before nerves got the better of me and pulled the ring out of the pocket! She said yes, I bounced back up and now I could truly relax!

Beautiful weather in Paris!

TGV to London, really enjoyed the train ride and arriving straight into the city. Olympic's were coming!

Taken from the London Eye.. but no idea what it is?

Another 4 days in London and it was time to catch a BA LHR-FCO flight.. in Y!:mrgreen: Emergency rows greeted us onboard and all was forgiven.. but geez the plane had seen better days! Rome was beautiful and hot and we were 5 minutes walk from you guessed it...

Also had a nice night at the Waldorf.

Next was FCO-BSL a return trip on Swiss that we could just forfeit the return leg due to the crazy one-way pricing I saw in Europe! Switzerland for another 4 days, expensive country and beautiful countryside. Even managed to get snapped by a speed camera! I'm from Victoria and haven't ever been snapped by a camera yet go snapped by one in a small village between Basel and Lucerne? Oh well :D

Lucerne was beautiful.. and did I mention.. expensive? We headed up to the Snow as Emma is from Brisbane and hadn't really been to the snow before. You know.. European Summer so you go to the snow.. right?

Back up to Basel and it was on the express train into Paris to catch our flight the next day. Stayed at the Hilton la defense and was upgraded to a relaxation suite and again service was great, breakfast buffet amazing! Off it was to CDG with a private car (Why didn't I organise this when we landed??) and we were thrown in to the chaos that is CDG for our quick hop over to FRA. Got stuck behind a Chinese tour group through security, asked about prioirty line.. got yelled at. Emma told me not to yell back as she wanted to get on the plane! She knows me too well! Into the LH lounge, pretty ordinary but it had drinks, wifi and a place to charge my iPad. LH Business is pretty ordinary on inter-Europe trips but it was adequate.

Arrived at FRA full of excitment as this was to be 'my' part of the trip. The previous cities seemed to be made of lots of tourist sites and lots of shopping (possibly more of the latter.. we did buy an extra suitcase in London!) Dropped our luggage off for storage and picked up the hire car, a nice BMW 320d. Very comfortable Autobahn cruiser... We had 3 hours of driving ahead of.. for we were heading to Spa, Belgium!

Next morning off to Spa-Franchochamps, Emma sat in the shade while I went exploring. For a Formula 1/Car nut like me... I was in my element!

Back on the autobahn to dropp of the BMW and pickup the Porsche from Avis, you only live once...right? I was often reminded of this by Emma in the following hours. I repsonded with 'yes, exactly' as I dropped it down a few gears and moved over to the left :)

Next visit the Nurburgring, and a chance to take highly modified Suzuki Swift around the track. After many many hours of 'training' on the xbox, watching youtube, studying the track layout. It meant nothing, it did not prepare me for the sheer lunacy of the 'Ring. Strapped into our harnesses, off to the gate, ticket in... let's go! Thought I was going well, until a Porshce GT3 absolutely screamed past us mid-corner. I said to Emma, 'it doesn't get better than this.. does it!' She responded with 'let's just do the 4 laps, don't get confident, you only live once!' There it was again :D You could not have wiped the smile off my face at this stage, an insanse experience that I absolutely can not wait to do again.. Emma on the other hand... :D

Another day of rest and was time to head back to FRA. A few little hiccups with the LH FCT that I wasn't impressed about at all but they were resolved by a different attendant. Emma made herself at home in the bath with rubber duckies... that comfortable to the point I had to go interrupt and tell her the car was waiting!

Please sir, take me to the plane!

Welcomed aboard to LH's 'old' first class. Nothing wrong with it for what we paid.. who was I to complain? Food was the best by far, service amazing and a real pleasure to be onboard.

Connected to TG ICN-BKK (via TPE) in C. Again a nice flight, but wow we had been spoilt in F! Arrived at BKK for a 5hr layover overnight, TG ground staff let us just relax in the first class check in area for the layover and soon enough it was time to check in.

Off to the lounge, another massage and on the plane to SYD. Impeccable service once again, and we landed in Sydney. We then realised how dirty Australian airports are!

Next day SYD-MEL on board Virgin's A330 (another points redemtpion) and we were home. Picked up by family, much ooo'ing and ahh'ing over the shiny new rock on Emma's finger and much 'mate, you have to go the 'ring!' from me!

We had an absolutely amazing time, and am now constantly looking out for the next big trip which will possibly be the honeymoon... on points of course :)

Once again, thank you to everyone in the AFF community that has helped through the jounrye and I hope I haven't bored you too much.

Cheers

Congrats on the engagement and TG F :) I've never given TG F a go but will hopefully have a chance one day :) Tried MH F which I believe has the same seats as TG F.

Great trip report and congratulations to you both.

I'm currently umming and ahhhing about TG J vs F for a USDM trip next year. Given it's our first time on USDM and not in Y and to save the hassle of getting to and from Sydney from MEL I'm thinking of just playing it safe and going J to and from FRA - do you think F is that much better?

Thanks for the TR and congratulations to you both.
I love seeing good people who are happy.

Well done on trip report and even more on congrats on your engagement! Im sure First made no difference to her answer lol but worth the extra insurance!
Just gotr back from nearly the same trip and it was beyond awsome. Will try to get a report up shortly also.
Keep us infromed of your next booking:D

Great TR hummel! It's amazing how US DM is creating more amazing memories on AFF :D

Congratulations on popping the question! Best wishes to Emma and you.

That's an amazing photo of your Emma; it has a kind of "timeless" value to it. I'd be printing that for a wallet / at work photo. :)

How often do you fly J/F long haul? That is the question I asked my self... it was a no brainer. Buggy pick up at BKK, 1hr massage, comfortable bed etc

It's funny actually, I said to Emma during the SYD-BKK leg that I'm going for a walk to explore the cabin, I got as far as seeing the business class cabin.. and going to back to my F seat to enjoy another scotch. :)
