hat requires entering in credit card details and I can guarantee I would forget to unsubscribe given I will be overseas in less than two weeks :D

The article is to be found in the inserted AFR Magazine.

There is nothing of real note in the article. Nothing we don't already know.

Talks about how the no.1 desire of members is for them to get any seat that is available.

The most interesting thing, I have included as quoted below, is the move away from bank controlled rewards programs.

A second strategic move behind the program's revamp is the decision to push for what, in more marketing parlance, is known as 'customer ownership'. At present, frequent flyers who use credit cards to accelerate their points accumulation do so in two sublty different ways: via a program where points are carried by a non-Qantas company or via a program where points convert directly to Qantas Frequent Flyer points. Called 'indirect sweep' and 'direct sweep' programs, the difference is that in the first case, the card issuer, say American Express, controls the points and the financial value of those points - and the customer relationship. In the second, it is Qantas.

Eliminating all the indirect sweep programs from the new scheme is almost as radical as hiving the Frequent Flyer program off into a separate company. While frequent flyers could simply ignore the chance to buy shares in their program, they will have to decide whether they want to direct all their spending to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program or not.

... Qantas is effectively calling on it frequent flyers to commit to the airline rather than another card loyalty scheme that had offered Qantas flights as one in a range of rewards.....

{my bold - it does not appear in original article}

Fine by me! I'll continue my move to SQ/DJ/others and leave the rest of you to fight it out for the limited classic rewards or overpay for anyseat awards!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That's going to be a brave move. I know they have been promoting joint-branded cards with "direct sweep" recently. So does this imply all the bank rewards programs are going to either cease QF points transfers or have the transfer rates made unattractive to convince members to change to a direct sweep program?

Looks like my Amex and Diners points will be laundered through SPG to AA.

I think that is a good move - should eliminate some elements of dominance by CC holders - but you would guess that a lot of people already blindly chuck their points to QF anyway.

Interestingly when I changed my Amex card this week one of the first things that they asked was whether I wanted to flick points straight to QF...

Brave, and possibly stupid move if you ask me. My relationship is with the bank, and the ability to move my points into QFF is a decision for me to take at the time, relative to other options I may have.

Hmm - I just switched to Amex Plat with one of the benefits being 1.5 points/$ - guess I will have to switch that to Direct Sweep now...

So what do people think will happen to cards which do not offer a "direct sweep" method.

Eg my free citibank gold visa

AFAIK, no announcements have been made by any banks that point transfers to QF have/will be ending.

I assume they would have to give some level of notice as well.

A bit of sky falling in hysteria... until I hear from my financial institutions I'm not stressing about it.
