AFR Sunday Rear Window...Virgin NEW BUSINESS CLASS and SINGAPORE DESTINATION 2014?

Hi all,

New planes and business class seats\layout coming to Virgin and MAYBE routes to Singapore and Bali with Business class.
Makes sense as Singapore buying up big to own them?
Hurry up and deliver the bloody things....I want to go to Singapore cheap and in comfort!

They are normally mutually exclusive

If this ever happens it will be interesting to see the pricing

QF struggles to fill their flights and they are generally selling fares about $750-$799

Or around $690 SGD for ex-SIN flights. Interestingly, SQ doesn't have the same issue, despite charging $1100/1200+ most of the time - around the same price SQ charges for Y+.

And if QF can't maintain its margin for J to/from SIN, someone somewhere would probably start asking questions on why QFi is flying to Asia at all.

Can't you already do that? Not as if the current prices are back breakingly bad. I doubt introducing VA on the route will push down prices by $200-400 in Y and say $800-1500 in J.


Don't VA already fly J to Bali? I mean, it's just 737s but still...


Finally, I think SQ are forced to operate that many services if it wants to have any chance of capturing a large traffic to service its extended network (let alone for the Star Alliance). Not that necessarily they can fill every single seat on their aircraft with people going to SIN only alone. Besides, they aren't all necessarily full aircraft all the time.

I suspect exactly the same. I've been forced onto SQ for the last four flights - actually due to QF being booked out! (Clearly just a coincidence) But the SQ flights out of AU have been half empty every time.... Great for me stuck in Y - have had 3 seats free everytime.

Well JQ do have a few A330s to DPS... and soon a B787. But........ it is JQ. I think most will gladly fly indirect (or fly the new GA) to get there instead.

In fact, given that ground support for the non-home airlines at DPS at times is more ****house than a latrine, perhaps one should consider flying the home airline, GA.......


To get back on topic, VA operating to SIN would be pretty nice. Obviously, there's no signs soon that the SIN market is oversaturated at all.

To get back on topic, VA operating to SIN would be pretty nice. Obviously, there's no signs soon that the SIN market is oversaturated at all.

Neither Jetstar or Scoot could maintain their dailies to MEL/SYD respectively, so we're probably not far away from oversaturation, at least in the bottom end of the market anyway.

Interesting data point. That said, I thought VA wouldn't necessarily be going for that end of the spectrum; their objective is more synergies with EY and SQ, plus basically attacking QF's share (and indirectly EK). Now whether that market is oversaturated is another thing.

You could imagine SQ might be interested to directly or indirectly subsidise it if feeds their network?

Also in today's AFR, SQ have confirmed that their yields to SIN from AU have fallen steeply - which explains why my SQ flights have been half empty recently!!!

They have been reluctant to lower pricing, with QF pretty much on sale all the time with a PE product at their Y pricing I would have expected more competitive pricing from them. MH probably have not helped either, not to mention Air Asia.

Would be interesting to see MH and Air Asia's yields. But with some QF flights being half-empty as well even at their permanent sale price point, it looks like nobody is flying anymore - at any price point. I guess the carriers will retain their current frequency for the southern summer, but I wonder how many of them would start putting flights onto the chop come February next year. e.g. QF can replace the 2x A330 that are timed more or less together with 1x 747 until markets improve.

I'm sure you would find Air Asia's yields fairly distorted.
Honest & accurate transparency has never been a key element of either airline.

Not if you use BITRE data which is based on ticketing, Air Asia averaged 80% loads in and 75% out of Australia in August.QF by comparison 68/62 to Sin, MH 87/82, SQ 75/78 and Scoot 64/70.
