Hi All,
Just wanted to add a note on the Air New Zealand luggage allowance. We were travelling as a family with my wife and I sharing a bag – 30KG total for the 2 of us. We were told by Air New Zealand that the bag would have to be repacked or we would have to pay extra as the weight limit was PER PIECE and not combinable – even though the total weight was below the combined weight limit.
I’ve done quite a bit of travelling and have never had this rule applied by anyone else – so I was pretty grumpy about it. I asked the supervisor but was told “That is the rule”. So we had a delightful 10mins at the check-in counter spreading our baggage (mainly dirty clothes at the end of a 2week holiday) out between the kids bags (all way less than the limit).
Not the best way to end the hoilday!

To make matters worse - when we got the lunch service the Vegetarian meal we booked for my daughter was not available - and their suggestion on how this was going to be fixed was 'you can buy her something from the snacks' - even though we had a receipt showing that we had requested a Vegetarian meal for her.

I wont be rushing to use ANZ again!

I agree with you Rob. Not up to standard. Kiwis are a lot of things but one thing we can normally depend on them is being practical.

Vote with your feet.

I think Air NZ have a problem with Vegetarian meals as the last 4 flights. I have had with them I have never received my pre-ordered one.

Agree on the meal issue... but you'll find a great many airlines who would do the same with the overweight bag...

Yes its a OSH issue - generally bags weighing around 30kgs will have to be lightened because of weight lifting issues for baggage handlers.

32 kgs seem to be the magic number. As for the OP, airlines who go by the piece system seem to be fairly strict on this (QF and their gold status allowance for one).

Hi guys thanks for the comments -

I understand the 32kg limit on a single piece as an OH&S issue, but the Air NZ policy was 23Kg limit on a single piece - so if it was 24kg it would attract a $50 excess bagage fee.

What annoyed me the most was not being allowed to combine the 2 passenger weight limit (23kg) into a single piece with a weight less than 32kg.

That is the Piece system for you!
