Was just browsing through my latest copy of Australian Aviation, and saw that Air New Zealand is going to start flying AKL - EZE (Buenos Aires) at the end of the year! I found the news ítem at the NZ site also:

Air New Zealand to fly direct to Argentina - Air New Zealand

Essentially they will start with three services per week, using 777-200´s. Tickets will become available for booking from March, for the December 2015 commencement of flights.

Maybe that will open up Sth America direct for LM points also? :)

Or Aeroplan pesos . Might be related to Olympics in Rio .. a Star Alliance gateway?

Theoretically this should mean it's possible to do a Star Alliance RTW completely in the Southern Hemisphere...? Paid, can't imagine NZ would release many award seats on this route.

NZ will no doubt be watching the political and economic situation in Argentina in the lead up to the flight launch. Would be problematic if things deteriorate too much, as carriers flying to Venezuela have discovered.

I hope you are wrong, but I suspect you will be right regarding availability of award bookings. As for the general situation in Argentina, I think they are a much more modern and stable country than those crazy Venezuelans!!

NZ dont release any awards to the Americas so I doubt that will change with EZE. NZ has made a very succesfull business out of making very unpopular decisions that people just live with.

Not so sure it's specifically a rule, as far as I know they don't release rewards to the U.S. because it's a very popular flight and they don't need to, not so sure whether this will be true or not to EZE until we see loads. They don't release many reward availability to PPT but that doesn't mean they apply a general rule to South Pacific, RAR is fairly easy to get.

I wonder how easy it will be to get a reward seat to EZE... Boom tish ;)

Sorry couldn't help myself... Late at night and about time for bed I reckon
